Audi TT Engine failure

    Hi All,

I have recently bought a second hand Audi TT, went to a main dealer to get a major service, timing kit, and brakes done. This work cost over 2k, bringing my spend up to 5k.
1 day later after 300km, the engine has a catastrophic failure ( loud bang, then metallic clacking sound, leaving trail of oil down the road ).
The mechanic who towed it back to the main dealer who has just serviced it told me he thought a con rod might have punched through the engine block.

Does this sound like the work on the car from the Main dealer was at fault? Or just my bad luck?

Should I be going back to the garage I bought it from two months ago?
I am really not sure of my rights here, all I know is I have spent 5k and have no car, or no money for a new engine. :(

Any advice much appreciated, I am really, really upset.

BTW this is my 6th Audi, and 3rd TT, never really had any major problems before.

What did your "major service " consist of?

    Hi there,

for 2300 I got 125k service, oil change, new water pump, new timing kit (big job), 4 new brake discs, all new brake pads, 1 new caliper, aircon redone, etc. The brakes and the Timing Kit was most of the money. I am worried that the indroduction of the timing kit could have caused or contributed to the failure?

What year and engine have you got?

You would need to find the cause of the failure before you can determan if its due to the work that was done.

If its has broken a rod then its unlikely to be due to a service or timing belt issue. A rod can only really fail due to part failure/fatugue or injecsting water into the cylinders.

Sounds like the usual problem with the 1.8T. Sludge builds up in the sump which blocks the oil pump pickup causing lack of oil pressure which leads to engine failure. Did the dealer use an engine flush as part of the service?

I would put my money on them botching installing the new timing belt/kit.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

    Hi again,

no, there was no engine flush with the service. There were no warning lights or anything, just one peculiar thing, since the service, a small puff of smoke from the engine whenever I lifted off the throttle, I just assumed it was a bit of oil being burnt off.

What should I do? I would hate to scrap the car, it really was pristine before this, new tyres, brakes, full service history, 125k miles, btw it is a 99 225 bhp model. Since I only bought it two months ago, can I bring it back to them?

Im sure the main dealer will wash its hands and give me a massive quote for replacing engine and turbo etc ( they are looking at it right now ).

Is there an easier route to drop a reconditioned engine in? Im thinking the next step is to get it towed from Audi to the place I bought it.

Find out what happened first. Ask to see the physical engine damage in their garage, take a picture if you can and post up here;).

Out of curiousity, if someone was looking to buy a 1.8T (assuming it affects all of them) what would it cost to repair this as general maintenance?

The preventative measure in most cases involves removing the sump, cleaning it out and replacing the oil pump pickup pipe. The cost varies depending on what car the engine is in. The transverse applications are easy enough to do but the longitudinally mounted engines (Passat, A4, A6, Superb) are a pain to get the sump off as the subframe must be lowered to allow clearance for the sump to come down.

That's something I need to do with mine in the near future.

I'm just lost as to why the OP went to a main dealer for all that work on an Audi that cost €3k...

As regards the car you need to find out what exactly went wrong before pointing fingers. :)

Can anyone tell me where I can find a replacement engine, code AMU or BEA for 225bhp model.

The Garage I bought it from is honouring its warranty, but its Parts or Labour, so I must find an engine.

    Any help much appreciated.

Kilcock Car Dismantlers had one up until recently, not sure if they still have it.

Alternatively, I know a guy who may have one so PM me if you want more info.

Wow, that sucks and also im genuinely confused as to why you would get a main dealer €2.300 service on a 3 grand car when a good indy would probably have done a better job and spotted the problem instead of just getting as many parts into the car and sticking to just that.

Could have asaved abit of money atleast, timing chain kit isn't that expensive the brakes would be though

Thanks for that Kilcock engine is gone, PM sent.

According to the Traynors website they are breaking 3 now and have done 23 in the past.

I find www.partsgateway.co.uk excellent...obviously bringing in an engine from the UK may be expensive in shipping costs but you might find one at a good price in Northern Ireland
