Hi all, have been on the lookout for a road bike but no luck so far.. Hoping ye fine folk can help me out.. Have you got anything, do you know someone who has or could you link somethink of value from donedeal ect ect..

Details are.. heavyish rider 96kgs:eek: 5'11"-6' tall. Bike will be used for training/leisure purposes.. lightish bike that can move when pushed on. From one hour sessions to gone all day.. My budget of 600ish is pushing me towards second hand, which I don't mind. Little paint damage doesn't matter once mechanically perfect.

It's a minefield out there with fellas trying to sell stuff on for what they bought them for 2 years ago:confused::confused:

    Cheers, Marty.

They are out there. Sod's law says you'll see loads advertised the day after you give up and buy something new (it's happened to me several times).

This for instance probably sold for near €700 after being advertised for €1150.

Look for a 56cm or 58cm in traditional sizing. Bikes with very sloping top tubes (e.g. Giant) will probably be sold as "large".

Avoid 53/39 chainrings at your weight, 50/34 or a triple chainset would probably be more suitable.

Are you saying to avoid sloping top tubes or just saying they're sized as large? And regarding chainrings, is this a biggie? Would it make a big difference and is it just to make it a bit easier on hills ect..?? Just curious and thanks for responding :) (PS, although heavy, I have a bit of go in the legs from mtb and running)

So, any other ideas out there?? Any further advice??
    Cheers, Marty

Regarding sizing, frames are normally measured by seat tube length. People tend to think "I'm a 56" or whatever, which means they would fit a bike with a 56cm seat tube if the top tube was horizontal.

The seat tube on a compact frame might measure 52 or 54 cm but be size equivalent to a notional 56cm. To avoid this confusion manufacturers of compact frames tend to use designations like S/M/L/XL rather than a seat tube measurement.

Regarding chainrings, yes it does make a big difference. A bike with a compact chainset (smallest chainring 34) will be much easier to ride up steep hills than a standard double (smallest chainring 39).

Ah I see, thanks for that info Lumen. Steep learning curve for me with knowledge of bikes and components.. Been away from the game for a while you see :)
    My quest continues...

OK OK.. Development.... Opinions on this... Been offered a bike.. Reynolds 501 frame(according to decal), How to identify such a frame?? unknown components as of now(functioning well).. Old but functional mavic wheels.. Straight and true.. €350...
Tempted at this... For my needs at this time, it suits.. I could upgrade components, or save
    for a more rounded bike..
    Opinions please??

What about the B'Twin Triban 3 from Decatleon. Available new at about €400 delivered from their Belfast store.

There is a thread about the bike here with details of a recent positive review:

"In general, 501 was aimed at the mid-range market. Hence the slightly thicker and heavier tubes, seamed construction and in Reynolds' opinion, inferior CrMo steel"

Depends on condition, but I think €350 is a lot for an unremarkable old bike.

Sounds awful expensive...but...If that's what that is worth.....I'd nearly be tempted to part with my Reynolds 531c, 23" frame road bike with full 7-spd shimano 105 groupset, internally routed cables and shimano wheels.....

Great stuff route66, thanks for throwing a spanner in the works :) That IS tempting, would be no messing around with that. It could well be a goer at this stage, thanks a million...

Ya Lumen i've read that thread... You see 350 is a tad high alright, I'll agree with that, but the big plus would be no travelling to view a bike that could well turn out to be a dud.. That's the biggest problem I have with this whole process and why ROUTE66's option is looking good..

Hope OP doesn't mind me hijacking but I like the look of that Beone - a couple of questions:
    - what part of the country are you in
    - why are you selling?
    - how my kms on the bike?
    - what height are you. I'm 5 6 and it looks like a good fit

Would the bike be up for viewing in Dublin? I'm a bit below 5'11" and would also be interested if the size is right.
