You can't, I'm afraid. Caveat emptor, and all that...

What checks did you do before you bought the car? Did you have a mechanic look at it, or have it inspected by the AA??

Private sale? Sold as seen, buyer beware.

Um - No she didn't. It can hardly be said to be the seller's fault you didn't bother to make any checks on the car before you parted with the readies!!

If it was a private sale, you can do nothing as its a private sale, you bought it as you found it with ZERO come back.

If it was a dealer sale, you have limited warranty rights under the sale of goods act.

Sorry, but NO!!! It wasn't perfect because it broke down as soon as you got it...

No it wasn't perfect. There was pre existing wear on the oil pump evidently.

Which is why anyone with a lick of sense gets someone familiar with the make and model to give it a once over. Not taking a look themselves because they "know a bit about cars".

one would assume the worst but to be fair the seller may not have known this either

Always get a mechanic to look for fault codes and give it a once over

would you have been able to tell the car was a banger when it was running perfect and was driving perfect and was dipped for oil again perfect in all fairness took a main dealer mechanic 2 days to find the problem

Now ye know a bit more. Like what an oil pump does, etc etc. Sorry bout your car. I blame your brother, myself. Or at least I would, if I was you. It'd make me feel better.

hahaha i always knew what a oil pump did hahah now i know dont buy a car of donedeal haah it was actually the brothers fault tbh tho haha donedeal was his idea i wanted to go to a dealer or at least buy a car local

Ah no. Done Deal's fine, but you should always make your own checks!

Lesson learned - no? Even if you buy a banger, that's a lot of money wasted if you don't get value from the car.

Just curious as to how you would know if an Oil pump was going by looking at it? He just said his mechanic has taken two days to find this (I have to say my mechanics are very limited to I am asking a question)

I'd imagine if the fault actually showed up (rather than been hidden) it wouldn't have shown when the initially checked.

the mechanic checked to make sure it wasnt just a dodgy sensor when the sensor turned up ok he found the pipes leading to the pump werent too clean so he flushed a bottle of some cleaner in it and then all lights went off an hour later he starts the car and all lights are on and it sounded like a tractor and the pump was wining so maybe he did damage to it i just dont know
