I was driving my car on the motorway up to Dublin and it just started shuddering and shaking and i started to loose speed, so i headed to the nearest town to pull in and because i was loosing speed i did my best to speed up to compensate.

I decided to turn around and try to make it back home and it was fine for about 5 -6 minutes then it would shudder again and shake for about a minute or two then it would be ok, and in my rear view mirror i could see sparks coming from my car.
While all this was going on my engine light was flashing

Does anyone know what could be the problem?
I want to know if the car is worth fixing

Its a 01 Ford mondeo saloon with about 130,000 on the clock

Faulty coil packs if petrol perhaps.

Usually your engine light flashes when you have a misfire which can damage your cat, that could have been the sparks you see

    Is it fixable?
How much would it cost roughly would you know?

Key thing is to not drive the car, if you're poisoning the catalytic converter it will get expensive.

The car is at a friends house right now, Would it be ok to drive it about 40 -50 miles?

Might be cheaper to get a taxi if you had to replace the CAT as a result.
