Sprinting Faster

    I hope this thread is okay here. I wasn't sure where to put it because I play GAA but it's the running that concerns me.


    At the age of 14 or 15 I was pretty fast compared to the rest of the team, but as we've become older (I'm 19 now) I seem to have fallen behind. Probably more than half of the team are now faster than me. Over the last 2 years I've been really busy with my leaving cert and stuff so I've had a couple relatively long periods when I wasn't training. I only started again in May after 9 months or so off. I guess that might have an impact. 2 months later, I am more fit in terms of stamina but I feel just as slow, so I said I'd ask!

    We never learned anything about technique or form when running, so first of all, how do you sprint?
    What kind of training is best to improve sprint speed? (Anything, really - I have a gym, running track, a beach and many horribly steep sand dunes at my disposal!)
    Should I worry about diet?
    Anything else?

    Wide-ranging question. I presume you're just wanting to improve your speed around the GAA park generally, not wanting to take up track?

    That being the case, in your position, I'd do the following.
    1. Just get used to running fast. Set yourself sessions of 30m-60m, run them flat out and recover fully before repeating.
    2. Technique is best taught by a coach, not over the Net. However one quick fix is to run 100m barefoot strides on grass, focusing on running tall (high hips) with active arm drive. Run at 70% effort, rest and repeat.
    3. Any gym conditioning work is worth doing for increased strength and fitness. Consult a coach though before doing any weights targeted at sprinting.
    4. Diet? You'll know what a balanced and healthy diet consists of.
    Where in Cork have you got a track, beach & dunes :confused:

    Sorry, yeah I mean my speed on the pitch. I just thought a track might help.

    I'll probably make out a running plan so, bearing those points in mind and I'm sure it'll help! I'll also work in gym time, and it should be looking good! Thanks for the reply!

    The beach and dunes are in West Cork near where I live, and I go to college in UCC so I can access the Mardyke track and gym there.
