Very sad to report that Jim Kenny has passed away today, July 28th.

Jim was possibly best known for his involvement with Sunshine Radio and Tomangos.
In recent times Jim was involved with 4FM / Premier FM / Spirit FM and Christmas FM to name but a few and was a regular contributor on the now defunct radiowaves site.

    RIP

    RIP

Other stations he was involved with included: Radio Dublin, ARD, Choice FM, 98FM, Hot Country and Sunshine 106.8 . His temporary licence involvement was 2 of the runs with Premier, 1 run with Choice FM, all 4 Christmas FM runs, at least 3 runs with Hot Country and providing advice at the beginning to Heartbeat FM.

Although I only first heard him when he was with Premier FM, I think this is very sad news. From what I learnt since this, I know he was an influential figure in radio and a talented deejay in the club/disco scene.

I am also sad to hear of his passing because he was a frequent and very useful contributor to the Radiowaves Forum, using the username "Jolishan" - he made no secret of his identity.

Many people involved in radio in Dublin over the years would undoubtedly have either come across him or been aware of him. So I would imagine (if word has got around) that many will pay their respects.

    RIP

I only met Jim once or twice but was very aware of his influence in the radio scene over the last 30 odd years and I know he will be sorely missed.

    RIP Jim.

It's very sad to hear the news of Jim's passing.

While he is well known for his on air presentation through many years on the radio, I remember him best for his work behind the scenes of the early Dublin AM pirates, where he introduced professional research and production techniques to what was a very loose and hap-hazard scene at the time.

His production of a whole weekend of programming on ARD in the late 70's when the station played every number one single since the start of the UK charts was an incredible achievement, completed despite a lack of specialist music outlets in Ireland and obviously without the aid of email and digital downloads. It was great radio produced with minimal resources, but with total dedication and perseverance.

As any of the established club DJ's will tell you, his love of radio was matched by his love and extensive knowledge of all styles of music. He was one of the very few who could excel in both studio and live venue presentation.

Jim put his heart and soul in to anything he turned his attention to. On the too few occasions when we met, I very much enjoyed chatting to him. Always a gentleman and always willing to talk to anyone who shared his interests in life, music and radio. He will be missed by all who knew him, or listened to him.

My sincere sympathies to his family and friends.

    RIP Jim.

Many people have paid so many glowing tributes to Jim over the past few days. He was a real character and whilst Radio and the clubs etc were very much part of his life his family were just so important to him. He adored his wife and 3 girls and only ever wanted the best for them. He was very good to me when I returned to Ireland in helping me get back on my feet, got me lots of gigs and even found me a residency at a nightclub in town. he also advised me musically on my on line radio stations and was a source of incredible information.

I'd ring him from a gig to his gig asking him the name of an obscure song I'd been asked for I'd give him the lines of the song and he would always come up with the title even whilst under pressure.

I will really miss him greatly, a gentle man who had time for everyone but who had the biggest battle with his health over the last few years. Life is cruel, always the good people are taken from us Jim probably 30 years too soon There'll be some playlist created up there when he meets Tony Dixon

    RIP Jim

I only knew Jim from working with him briefly in Christmas FM. He worked in 4FM too but that was before my time there. I'll be there to pay my respects at his funeral mass tomorrow morning.

I first met Jim in 2008 when he joined the gang at Hot Country. I remember going to a pre station meeting and after the meeting was over listening to guys like Jim, Joe Doyle, Enda Caldwell and others talking about radio. I listened for what seemed to be hours as these guys laughed and joked about what they called "the good old days"

From day one of the 2008/09 license runs Jim meant business. He knew the music and the way he wanted it played, instructed you accordingly and expected nothing more from you.

In the radio studio he was all business but outside the studio he was a gent and a very pleasant person to chat with.

Only a month or so ago I got a call from him to say that he and a few others were working on an oldies project and would I be interested in helping out. That was the last time I spoke to Jim.

With the closure of Radiowaves I have set up this account so I could add my condolences and my memories to the ones added above.

    May he rest in Peace.

Met Jim in ARD in December 1979 and later a few times in 1980 at Radio 257. He was very nice to a teenage anorack and had a great sence of humour.

Although late my condolences to family and friends.

You were a great influence on Irish radio.

    RIP Jim.
