    Hi Guys

Currently driving a 1600cc 2002 Ford Focus which i am more than happy with. But now there is a little one on the way, the dog is going is to have to be evicted to the boot area as opposed to the back seat.

So i'm looking to get something a little bigger as I need boot space for a medium sized dog and buggy and other paraphenalia.

Budget is tight and don't want something that is going to cost me a fortune in petrol to run! Wanted to spend 5k and not go backwards in year. Obviously needs to reliable!

Was thinking of a 2004 Mondeo Estate as the sensible option. But really wanted a Nissan X-Trail for ages. 2.2 diesel probably being the only one to go with. Or maybe a petrol Honda CRV. Its really the width in the booth as opposed to the depth!

Any thoughts? Is a 1.8 or 2.0 Mondeo going to be more petrol hungry than my trusty focus?

    Thanks

Drive the X-Trail and you'll be cured of wanting one. For your needs, an estate is the way forwards. The Citroen C5 estate seems to offer a lot of value at the moment?

Mondeo petrol will be thirstier ok.

    X-Trail isn't huge inside either.

driven the X-trail. And whilst they are not exciting to drive I still like them. Always wanted a jeep. Managed to get the sports car thing out of my system a few years ago. But still havent managed to shake this off!

Subaru Outback. Great handling, great grip, AWD, massive boot and cheap as chips as they are seen as "expensive" to tax. They have good ground clearance if you want to do some lighter off roading and more capable than a Volvo XC70 or Audi AllRoad. Other good option if your looking for a 4x4 type vehicle is the Subaru Forester. Not as big as the Outback but really solid good drive, awesome handling an dplanted on the road just like the Outback. Similar ground clearance and better off road (the manual versions have a low range, not a true low range but it drops the ratio about 15%). Really big, boxy boot space on the Forester, really practical.

The X Trail is a puddle jumper at best. A city 4x4.

I had the jeep itch for a while. Bought a 2.2, 06 x-trail in the spring.

We have a small farm and i have a 4 wheel cattle trailer behind it sometimes and it pulls well.
Have it in the fields, fencing and stuff and it travels the ground well.
    Averages 38mpg which is reasonable.

I like the more upright drivIng position and the seats are electric and super adjustable so I find them comfortable, heated too for the cold mornings.

Boot space is fine, and the seats fold flat through which is great and it can carry a big load easily.

It's a nice cruiser, I've had to hammer it a few times and it holds the road supprisingly well at higher speeds.

I got a low mileage with good service history. The noisy timing chain on startup is my only beef but all three I'd test drive were the same and I spoke to a Nissan mechanic and he said it was normal.

I'd love a Forester diesel bit they are WAY out of my price range. Maybe someday.
