Myself and a few friends were thinking of organising a camping trip to Galloway Forest Park in Scotland, which has been designated recently as one of the darkest spots in Europe for visibility etc. Only thing I'm worrying about now is weather; being Scotland, I assume it's overcast a lot of time. Between lugging telescopes/binoculars etc, I'd just like to ensure that we give ourselves the best possible opportunity for stargazing. Obviously, nobody here is psychic, but is there anyone out there with pro-tips for the optimal time to go?

January with the still clear frosty nights, you might need polar survival equipment though. ;)

More realistic for you but a bit vague sorry, I'm guessing after the Summer and before the Autumn storms.
You know when you still have the warmish days and quite cool nights, the weather is often quite settled around then.
Also because you're heading north you might want to give it another few weeks for the Sun to dive a bit lower below the northern horizon, we are only 5-6 weeks past mid-summer.
You would probably get some very detailed info asking over in the weather forum.

That said it is Scotland so you might as well toss a coin. :)
