I was changing the syphon today, and to give myself room to undo the wall screws,I disconnected thefloat arm from the inlet pipe. After putting it all back together, the water gushes out of the back of the big plastic screw that attaches the arm to the inlet. The water slows down but doesn't stop filling .Any ideas?

Yip. The washer inside that is not the right way around or is missing, Techanically its actually a diaphragm but it looks like a washer.

I did drop the arm and it came apart but I thought I'd put it back together correctly!
Under the large plastic nut there is a large white washer with two holes in it.Is it this you refer to,or something in the arm mechanism?
