I seen a people carrier today (09 Mitsubishi Grandis?) And the tax was "SN Exempt" there was no disabled badge on the vehicle. Can someone explain what "SN Exempt" is?

Special needs perhaps? Either way having tax exempt is free unclampable parking anywhere you want, it's the first thing the clampers check before fitting a clamp so they don't loose their job annoying a Garda.

we have a renault kangoo kar yoke in the family at the moment that is tax exempt. it has a wheelchair ramp in the back of it, we got it as is so it was already exempt but so i dunno the process to get somthing exempt

i have heard that it can be done with most vehicles so long as you can carry a wheelchair around in it unfolded, that said i dont know the process of getting a tax exemption or anything else so nobody be trying to get off paying tax saying that MurderFace told you to do it.

As for the clamping thing, would that also apply to parking tickets?

Haven't a clue what "SN Exempt" means but when a car is exempt from road tax, it gets a normal road tax disc but without expense. It has to be adapted and used for, or driven by a disabled person with a Primary Medical Certificate. Users are generally exempt from public parking charges, though elsewhere, rules are the same.... And it's no fun for anyone who has to avail of the system!!!!

I've never heard of SN Exempt before. Can you get a pic of it?

Surely its just one of the cars bought by people with primary medical cert. They get vrt back and I think tax exempt.

Maybe, my experience is the same as eph1958 - I've only ever seen disks that are identical to normal, but with €0 on them.

SN Exempt means car is exempt from road tax and that disc was issued from Shannon via online renewal.

If for example I renewed over the counter in Longford disc would have LD EXEMPT

You learn something new every day. :)

@OP there are several reasons to be exempt beyond disablement, e.g. state vehicles.

I applied for this a number of years ago when I first started driving (chancing my arm), got through to the last stage of it, you get exempt from motor tax, a disabled badge and you can buy a new car without paying the vrt (there was a rule on this that you had to keep it for x number of years). Dono if it's still the same, I never got it but I really had no need for it

@AltAccount, can take a picture of my tax disk if you reeally wanna see it,

got a parking ticket in this the other week and appealed it which was turned down but i never mentioned that it was exempted as i had not realised it might make a difference.

Wouldn't you need a badge or such in the dashboard to get free parking?

I would have also thought that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

It wouldn't have made any difference then

some older threads on here seem to suggest otherwise but i cannot find anything concrete, probabaly end up just paying the 40 quid
