Depends on your situation, a lot of drystock farmers need an early payment, stock in, flooded land, etc.

I just think this is a bit of a laugh to be honest. I am now farming fulltime the last few years having returned home as auld lad was getting on, previously worked and part owned other businesses, my point is what other business has this type of supports afforded to them if they are going through a rough period? None!!
Farmers coming on the airwaves crying and looking for advances in handouts are not doing themselves any favors in my view.
Ps I get a Sfp too but I could live without it and plan my business to survive without it.
    Rant over

Very few other businesses are as weather dependant as farmers
And it is not just Irish farmers - I think 6 countries including France have applied for early payment due to bad weather

I don't need it personally but the weather this year has cost us in the tens of thousands from profit - we have a good cashflow as we have dairy but some of the cattle only fellas will have forked out a lot in feed and not an animal sold - or else sold animals before they were ready so vastly reduced income

It makes no difference to me but i can appreciate that some will need it

What about health and Education are they not 100% provided and paid for by the state. Why not have a rant at those head teachers and Doctors on 100k+ if that's the case.
What about the corporation tax, I don`t see any farmers on that.

Ah jezz I only wanted to know if we were going to get paid early

To be fair, those businesses depending on summer tourism to make their few bucks, are very dependent on the weather.
They get an awful hammering in this sheet weather, and don't get one single cent by way of help.
Then the seafront places in Clare, had the media focus on beach closures from ecoli in the water. Apparently from farm run off due to bad weather:eek:

Ah I was just throwing it out there to see what sort of a reaction I would get! To be honest i totally agree that some supports are needed as we are not paid enough by the market prices to support profitable sustainainable agriculture, however some guys are creaming it with the high SPF they have and I think this needs a serious look at, which probably will never happen as these are the guys with the clout, on an aside I think any guy looking to get quota from the new entrants scheme should not be allowed to have more than 20k SPF, as there are some guys coming into it with huge payments from suckling tillage etc, which I believe is unfair to the guys in it all along.

Im not a fan of SFP but you ask what other business gets them, a huge amount of companies -
    All the airline companies
    bus,rail
    Private health insures
most IDA companies / actually nearly every start up company or new multinational in town gets grants one way or another

And all the Leader funding is creamed off the SFP!

Yes you are right Bob every business gets some support, however the SFp is pretty much a guaranteed income year on year, that's what I was kinda getting at.

Just wondering why new entrants? Why not a flat top rate of 20k for anyone whether already established or new?

I don't worry about SFP, mine wouldn't even count as "walking around money"

20k SFP wouldn't be a big drystock farm, surely entrants to dairying should have the land base to milk at least 100 cows looking into the future, I can't see any less than that surviving, A farmer with 100k SFP has a great track record to manage a dairy farm

I know €20k wouldn't be a big farm, I remember looking at a few names and numbers when that information used to be publicly available. My point was I think it would be unfair to new entrants to lower the ceiling on them while everyone else already farming can, perhaps not literally, sit back and enjoy their higher SFP cheque for no other reason than they're already farming. I think it would create further division which helps no one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,007 ✭✭✭Grecco

I`d go one further and cap the Payment at 20k then bias the share out to smaller productive farms. I say productive because there's a load of small farms around me that operate a skeleton setup with just enough stock to draw the SFP. On the other hand some of the smaller farms that are being farmed properly (and not from the sofa) are the most productive farms per acre out there.

Definitely the SFP will have to be levelled out, Its lunacy that a farmer with 200 euro/ ha has to compete for stock in a sales against a farmer with 800euro/ha SFP.

I agree that new entrants shouldn't have their SFP capped but as for getting it at all I'm quite happy to receive it for as long as some of our competitors get it too.
The United States currently pays around $20 billion per year to farmers in direct subsidies as "farm income stabilization".

again I have to stress I'm not in favor of any SFP but people seem to have serious issues with bigger claimers, even the massive payments over say 250k. The SFP is a grant to local Ireland, very little farmers that I know put the sep into their pocket but infact use the money fairly localish so it benefits rural Ireland. Even take a couple of the massive claimants, they run big operations employing many local workers, using huge amounts of say grain produced in the rural economy.

Just got text from DAFF to say that 50% SFP was lodged to be cleared in the next few days.

The text service is a very good idea. Dare I say, good work from the DAFF.
