    Hi ,

I'm currently swimming with a university club and am looking do to medicine . I want to get my swimming to the highest level possible and gain a degree putting me as a doctor . Is there scholarships available for swimmers of such caliber ?

Prob is that i haven't performed in competitive swimming but am looking to get membership with club in NAC so I can get that opportunity .

I know the US has the NACC linked scholarship programs but it requires county or national representation - which I dont have . :o

    Any help ?

    Cheers

I suppose the first thing to do is to either start competing with your current club, or join one that will enable you to compete. I think most scholarships require evidence of ability via competition. Perhaps have a look at the NCAA website and see the kind of times they are likely to be looking for? Bear in mind too that swimming scholarships (in the US at least) are very rarely 'full ride', so you would need to make a contribution towards your fees/living costs as well, which bearing in mind the cost of study in the States, could be very considerable (http://www.collegeswimming.com/news/2008/jun/3/tuesday-tip-how-common-full-ride/)

Also, just so you know, you cannot study medicine as an undergraduate degree in the States; you'd have to do a degree in something like biology (or choose pre-med as your major) and then do medicine afterwards. This of course is quite a long 'route' to medicine, so bear that in mind for when you're planning any scholarships etc., and check how any such scholarships will support you for any post-undergraduate study.

No offence but the chances of you reaching that level are incredibly slim. College scholarships are a hell of a lot of work and competition for not that much reward.

ye the scholarships i know are extremely difficult to achieve but i may as well aspire at least . I'm doing the GAMSAT but its keeping all options open for med and swimming .

My first question would be 'what events do you swim and what are your times?'.

The events id go for would be the 50m and 100m free and the 50m fly (100m at a push ) . Given I'm still improving I'd definitely want to expand those to greater distances hence the search for a club or coach thats willing to take me on .

I'm just going to throw this out there. Please note that these times are in 'yards'.

The top 100 times in the NCAA last season in the 50 free ranged from 19.01 -20.00

The top 100 times in the NCAA last season in the 100 free ranged from 41.86 to 44:05

The top 100 times in the NCAA last season in the 100 fly ranged from 44.76 to 48.10
