    Small problem.

Large capacity is generally easy to get power out of and as a result tax goes up.

Smaller capacity harder to tune and cost of modification goes up.
Modifying a car can make your insurance 2k alone.

If you are going to try and get something more modern look for something that your happy at the current power level and just sort the handling, breaking and cooling. The better set-up from the factory the better/cheaper. This will keep the cost down

There is a loophole. Consider a classic.

All this goes out the window though should you buy a dog. Some of the cares above I wouldn't look at but give an example of what models may be of interest.

Renaultsport Clio would be where I'd be looking.

Then again, it's easy to get around 180-200bhp cars around 2 litre that are coupes, rather than hatchbacks.

You do mean 170 to 200 bhp though yes? ;)

    excluding 1.8 models..........

would a kei car not suit ? 660cc... turbo or supercharger... keep them shuper light and short ratios will give many a car a heart attack; quite different too.

    How about a glanza?

    They're kinda ironically cool now.

Haha. I remember when I was in Axa branch last year cancelling my commercial van policy and there was a thirty something year old bloke across from me looking for a quote on a "toyota starlet". Reg number is given and the axa guy smiles "a toyota glanza? that's why your policy went up." The guy tried to sell the starlet story but it was just so pathetic. Axa were unable to quote me at all.....they couldn't this year but they might next year when I hit 30. I wouldn't expect them to be competitive. Sorry. OT i know.

If its modified they are still unlikely to quote you, even at 30.

Misunderstanding. I was not seeking a quote for a glanza. The guy across from me was. They wouldn't quote me for an fto....i could have made that clearer.

You cant go wrong with a 106 Gti or Saxo Vts but make sure to get em checked as like most small fast cars, they are well abused. If you were willing to pay more for tax,id go with a Clio 172.Had one myself and was a fantastic little car.Starlet Gt would probably be best for tax, mods and performance but it depends on your insurance then.

You'd get a tidy Type R for that money and they're a fun quick car out of the box. I know of one that'll be for sale soon!
