Looking for some advice on which of the above to go for. We recently had a third child and things are getting tight when all 5 of us pack into the current car for any sort of a road trip. Was never a fan of these vehicles but have to eat my words now. Have narrowed search down to following

    Ford s max
    Peugeot 5008
    Citroen c4 Picasso
    Vw Touran

Which of the above would fellow boarders fo for. Want a 1.6 diesel engine if available.

You should consider a zafira. I find the foldable 2 rear seats to be so handy, giving lots of boot space when needed. Also have 3 young kids and another on the way. It's a good car and with all seats up, you can still fit a buggy/push chair in the boot. We've driven from Dublin to Carrick-On_Shannon and back with a full compliment of passengers and luggage in relative comfort. A roof box will be considered when baby number 4 arrives. And no, the roof box is not for any passengers ;)

Oh and the picasso sucks. Had one on rental in Spain in June. Didn't like it. Really lacked power too, especially when going up hill. I would choose petrol if going for a 1.6. Too much power loss on diesel for that size car.

Have you ruled out the Qashqai+2? Plenty of room for kids and luggage, decent equipment and doesnt look like a minibus. Not the most exhilarating of drives, I'll admit but very comfortable (high seating position) and you don't have to bend double to buckle the kids in.

What's your budget? A group I was part of had a Zafira for a support car for a Mizen to Malin cycle this year and it wasn't well received by driver or passengers getting down to Cork.

I bought a 2.0 S-Max new in 08, and I have 160,000 km up now. The S-Max is easily the best to drive of those 4. The Touran is a size smaller than the others. Friends with a C4 also found the interior flimsy.

I haven't driven the 1.6 S-Max, it's a big car for an engine that size. Is it worth it just to get the €100 difference in road tax in class B instead of C?

Have to disagree. My wife has has one for four years and has done everything asked. Its reliable, nippy for a 1.6hdi, practical, cheap to run and buy.

I recently bought a Ford Galaxy to accommodate 3 kids.
I looked at alot of the mpvs.
I have 2 in the 2nd row and 1 in the 3rd row because I could not get the middle seat in as tight as I wanted with the middle seat belt.
    Here is what I found-
Anyone I know that has had a Zafira has said it has been a disaster and cost them more issues then anything.
The S Max is reliable but for me it would be a 3 child Max car and too small for anymore.
The Peugeot 5008 I loved but the lack of boot space was an issue.
The VW Touran is a really really nice car to drive and if you are only going to regularly have 3 in the back I would buy it.
If feels like your driving a VW Golf and it is economical and you have boot space with the 2 back seats down.
I only treid the big Citroens but everyone I know with the Picasso loves it.
The Avensis Verso Diesel might be worth a look too,it would be perfect for 3 children.

I needed a car that could take a 4rth child safely too while still having a boot!which really narrows down choice.

Mitsubish L400 or Delica (jap 4wd import based on pajero chassis). 7 or 8 seats depending on configuration, auto, really comfortable and capable on any terrain. It is a 2.2D though. Boot space is really good with all seats in place, very versatile seats to move/rearrange/turn around.

Pretty cheap to buy used as people are afraid of the 2.2D. They get about 24mpg. You can even walk into the rear without having to get out of the vehicle.

You'd probably get it for about €2000 and that leaves a lot of cash for tax/fuel over buying a more expensive alternative. They are very comfortable too.

    Land Rover Discovery 2/3/4.

Most comfortable of the lot. (Well, 3 & 4 models anyway)

I have 2 Espaces (Standard and Grand) very well going, bought them second hand at a very good price, taking in consideration the 'love' of some people for the origins of the "KING" of all MPVs !

You'll need space in the middle, for kids as they will get easily pissed and create a so unpleasant situation... in the front ! :)
Also, with the seats moved around, you can have space in the back (last row) or 2 front,1 middle and 2 back,by leaving side seats off, creating lot of side central space !

    Also,take a MPV with a good engine,possible 1.8/2.0T,you'll need it...is not a easy soft car !

    Regards

I've got a 2006 VW Caravelle 2.5 TDI. It's an amazing car. 7 leather seats in a 2-2-3 configuration. Loads of extras in it. It's a fairly high spec model. I've so far done 35k miles in 2 and a half years and its been great. We've gone to France and loads of trips to the UK in it. Its a great car to travel in. There's so much space in it which makes a huge difference for everybodys comfort.

I almost sold it recently but changed my mind and I'm glad I did. I'll be keeping it for another few years yet.

With respect the Caravelle is not a car, a mini bus or a van maybe.

It really comes down to the budget and how much space you need. Then get into each one and see if you like how the interior works for you. Some you might find too big, some too small.

It's not a much bigger than most large cars really. Definitely NOT a mini-bus, it's only a 7 seater. It actually drives better than a lot of cars, is much quicker too and is most un vanlike to drive.

The Caravelle is the Multivan in other markets and there is a mini bus version and they are based on a van chassis. Thats not a bad thing, a lot of vans are great to drive and many cars are brutal.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Transporter_(T5),

Caravelle is great, I'm just pointing out its a world away from compact MPV's. Some of which are shorter than saloon cars (but with more space). Some people prefer something smaller for parking etc. Other people like having more space. If you got 2+3 you generally end up with more people, and kids than just your own. And their luggage. 7 seats in a Touran gives you no boot. Whereas in a Caravelle you've still got useful space.
