Thinking of new Career in Accountancy - Advice Needed

Hi,

I am mid 30's and currently in full-time employment in office administration. I have a Bachelor of Business Studies which I completed by night (graduated 2006).

I did accountancy and business studies for my leaving cert and always loved maths so there has always been something in my mind that I would like to study accountancy and work in this area.

The thing is I don't know where to start. I don't know what type of qualification I should be looking at or what to expect.

Can I do evening classes and keep my current job? Or do I have to look for trainee accountant positions?

Has anyone totally changed career to accountancy and how did you go about it?

Hi,

You don't have to look for a trainee accountant position. You could do ACA, ACCA or CIMA in the evenings yourself. I come from a non accounting background but have started the CIMA qualification myself as I want to stay in industry. The difference between the 3 qualifications is often debated, but for me, I saw ACA and ACCA as quite similar, whereas the CIMA syllabus is more relevant to my work experience & previous studies.

However, Dublin would not suit so if anyone knows of any courses in the South-East, please let me know.
