    Hey,

I was wondering if anyone had suggestions of summer internships for math/physics/theoretical physics...

I know upto recently that FAS were doing the UREKA research program...but i think its been scrapped along with the FAS Science Challenge...

Im just trying to plan ahead...btw im not really into finance..any suggestions would be appreciated..

The only thing I can think of is the SPUR programme. I did an internship in the Maths dept a few years ago and it was a great experience. They usually start advertising early in second semester and you generally apply around Easter I think. I know most departments generally offer at least one project.
I'll see if I can find a link later - I'm on my phone at the moment.

Caveat: this is all aimed at undergraduates/recent graduates, I have no idea what level you are so this might be useless.

http://summerstudents.desy.de DESY (Germany): I did this last year, was excellent.

https://ert.cern.ch/browse_www/wd_portal.show_page?p_web_site_id=1&p_text_id=12 CERN (Switzerland/France): problem is that Ireland isn't a member state, so your chances of getting in are somewhat damaged.

    http://ed.fnal.gov/interns/programs/ipm/index.shtml Fermilab (USA).

http://www.surf.caltech.edu/ Caltech (USA), think this might be quite hard to get if you're not from Caltech though.

http://www.ipam.ucla.edu/rips/ UCLA (USA), so this is slightly more industrial but still accepts TP/Maths people.

There's also SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) at TCD but their website seems to be nonexistent right now so maybe it's been scrapped.

One thing to note is that even if you can't get into a funded program, you can always just ask a lecturer you like to take you on for summer project, even for just a reading project. You can work out of the library and meet them once a week. Of course, if you do this you should pick a lecturer who is enthusiastic about undergrads!

I was thinking of applying to this for this summer but my reading of it was: if you're not from a member state the probability of you getting a spot is almost surely 0.

Hi, I'm just wondering what to search for on Google or similar if I want to look into similar courses but primarily Maths and Chemistry, as those above seem mostly physics orientated.

This is what I keep telling myself, since I applied and didn't get it. :[ I know of two people who did get it, but they used member-state-nationality sneakery I believe.

There's a rising fourth-year student in Trinity on the program this summer.

For theoretical physics, there is also the Perimeter institute link
I don't know how competitive it is.

For mathematics there is a program they do in Imperial College London, I can't find the link though - basically you email some academic who's in an area you like. But I've been told that they rarely give it to people who aren't British.

There is also an industrial mathematics internship in MACSI in UL - but I heard that they are in financial difficulties so this may be ended.

Did he not use some non-Irish nationality hax to do that though? (Not in any way implying he doesn't deserve it cause he definitely does!)

The only person I know who went to Cern for the summer had French nationality!

This is no longer running, I believe.

Well I went to CERN for a summer and I'm Irish. There are usually 2 or 3 Irish students at CERN every summer. Another particle physics lab that has accepted Irish students in the past is DESY in Hamburg.

As part of the FAS science challenge?

Nope. It was a programme that UCD subscribed to. You can apply directly to CERN via https://ert.cern.ch/browse_www/wd_portal.show_page?p_web_site_id=1&p_text_id=12
The DESY application form is at
