tyre recomendations

I need to get 4 new 18in tyres for my A4.

Pricies for tyres vary hugely in the few places I phoned around - anything from €65 to over €250 a tyre.
I had a look at some of the cheaper brands that we quoted to me and there are some horror stories about them on this forum.

As a general question - what's a good make/model of tyre that doesn't cost a fortune but will perform well and not prove a false economy to buy.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Have a look at Hankooks.

    +1 for Hankooks
Have them on both cars 17" & 18"
Both do what they are supposed to do,

had hankooks on my leon. great tyre at a good price

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT ever buy Maxtrek tyres.

    Absolute sh1te.

I've used Kumho Ecsta spt ku31 tires before and have been pretty happy with them. I'd imagine they should be around 105 fitted each.

Hankook, Vredstein and Kumho would all be mid price range but good quality tyres

I can reccomend --> Michelin Pilot sport 3<--

I have 17" 225/45 and they are brilliant.
Long life, great in wet conditions
they are just below 200 euro for 18" ( what size exactly you need?)
my size cost about 130 euro.

Before I bought michelin I looked at hankook as well - they are cheaper, but won't last as long as Michelin.

Good year Eagle star assymetric 2 are also very good especially for wet conditions, I had them previously, but they lasted one year only ( about 25-30k km )

As someone who never had a clue about tyres, I had to do a lot of research for a few different vehicles. I've heard a lot of good things about Hankooks and also Vredestein, have 2 sets of Vredesteins myself and no problems at all. They come highly rated and are good value. The Irish Vredestein distributor is based in Monaghan, I know of both Sandyford Tyres and Discount Tyres who stock with them. Both usually work out cheaper than ordering online after fitting etc is taken into account.

I am looking for tyres for my 18 inch wheels (Opel insignia)

Was quoted 210 per tyre for Hancook's and was recommended these by the guy quoting over some a bit more expensive

However was quoted 212 for Bridgestones in a different place. Which would you go for?

Had bridgestone 050 on my car from new. Rotated them several times and had to replace the fronts @ 19k kms.
Couldnt wait to get rid of them.. The noise from them was awful

6k on the Hankooks now and there doesnt appear to be any sign of wear TBH.

Put my Niece on to Hankooks for her Insignia Elite and she is delighted with them.

They seem overly expensive to me, considering the brands. That said I'm used to 225/40/18's prices

Camskill have Continental Sport Contact 3's for 220 each including delivery @ 245/45/18. Obviously with fitting and balancing it goes up a bit but it's a different league of tyre.

Lost count of the number of places ice contacted & all decent brands are over 200

How much would fitting + balancing cost per tyre & could anyone recommend somewhere in Dublin?

+1 for the matador tyres . you should be able to get them fitted and all for about 450 e to 500e . I have them about 3 months now and have to say they are fantastic , the wet grip is excellent as well as the dry . try google the reviews they come out very well . They are made by continental .

If you are ever near Tallaght , try cookstown industrial est .Auto depot tyres .

Camskill can do Hankooks for £599.56 delivered which is about €779.20. I'd need to pay for fitting so the cheapest quote I saw online was €10 per tyre + €2 recycling fee. I was quoted €840 for4 fitted, balanced etc. Chanced my arm and asked for them for €800 cash, can get them for €820 i.e. wouldn't be worth it

Camskill can do Continental for £695.16 delivered which is about €903.31 including currency fees on CC

If I paid another €50 for fitting would the continentals be worth the extra €130 + hassle?

EDIT: Such a pity GBP has appreciated v the Euro!

    What size?
I paid 154 euro each for my Hankook Evo V12 255x17 in Blancharstown. Fitting/Balance included.

In case this is of any use to anyone, I rang Red Cow Tyres last year and they said that they're happy to take delivery of tyres you order online from the likes of camskill or eiretyres. It's 10 each for fitting and disposal of the old tyre.

eg they're GBP£40 cheaper than the Hankook's I posted so €205 sounds about right

Might not suit what your looking for but options.

Seriously give a call to Alloy-Wheels.ie, they always managed to get cheaper than Camskill for me, everything inclusive.
I am not affiliated with them, they just do a good job and are cheaper than anything else I could find.
Plus their Hankook supplier is just next door. No need to wait.

Interestingly Matador gets a higher review here than

    - Uniroyal
    - Continental
    - Hankook

I was quoted €95 for Wongly (i think) and €85 for Sagitars - the reviews on these have put me off.
I'm not exactly flush with spare cash at the moment and wouldn't like to go over €150ea if I could get something reasonably decent for this.

I shall call a few places with some of the recommendation on here (Matador, Hankooks, Kumho Ecsta, Vredstein and Kumho) to see what prices are like.

    Thanks for the replies.

That is the size on my car,
I paid 115 each for the hankooks, I do think they may be 120 now.

    The 245's for the Insignia

    Hankooks are over 200

    Kumho are 150

    Uniroyals are 185

    235's for the A4

    Hankooks = 170

    Goodyears = 180

    Sagator ( spelling??) 80 :P

    OP one more question
What is your type of driving, and what engine you have?

I can see that some people reccomend tyres I never heard about before, and they describe these tyres as good, but what does good mean? are they good for low speed corners, low speed travel from A to B, or are they good for dynamic drive in wet conditions?

Of course all these tyres are allowed to be on roads, but remember that this small area of rubber that touch asphalt is your last chance to keep car in track in any difficulties.

I have asked myself one important question - what is my style of driving?
and decided to end with more expensive tyres.

I had nankangs at some stage when i bought car - brand new tyres - I had no problem to loose traction on roundabouts, after that with sporty type of Good Year, and now Michelins it never happened in the same spots.

    It's a 190bhp 1.8T Petrol.
I don't go tearing around like a boy racer, but I do want tyres that I can rely on it wet/slippy conditions.
I'm moving down the country and will be doing a 100mile round trip commute on most days (not exactly the most economical car to be driving for this I know, but I can't afford to change cars without taking a major step down), majority of which will be on the motorway.

Give callaghan's in donegal a shout. Got two 225/45/18 kumho ku37 for €160 including delivery to my door in galway. Got tyres fitted and balanced for €16. They were cheaper than camskill and are Irish. Found them spot on to deal with. I ordered tyres on Wednesday at two and had them in my hand the next day at same time, no messing. Here's web address:
    http://www.callaghanstyrecentre.com/tyre-centre.asp

I haven't had a chance to test these tyres out properly (cars in garage) but they have good reviews online.

Anyone any comments on Toyo tyres? Thinking of buying alloys and Toyo tyres. Balanced and fitted professionally for €780 (They're only 15")... Also, could I put 16" or 17" wheels onto a car that was originally with 15" without much hassle or is that a no-no?
