3GS keeps rebooting

A friend of mine asked me to look at his 3GS, firstly it wasn't charging, I suspected the battery was gone so replaced it, it was on iPad baseband.

So I replaced the battery and tried to restore it with 5.1.1 custom firmware, kept gettin error (17 I think?), found out the error was caused by non Apple battery, so put the original back in and restored with 5.1.1 custom firmware, all went well. The old battery seemed to be doing ok, it was taking a charge and seemed to be holding it ok.

Then the phone kept rebooting every few minutes, I restored again with new custom firmware and it continued.

I then swapped batteries again ( to the new battery) and it seemed to be staying on but the battery percentage stayed at 41% although I'd been using it for 40 mins or so, then I plugged it into the mains charger to charge it.

Now since its plugged out its rebooting every 2 seconds!

I've looked into this and it seems quite a common problem, I read a "fix" about removing sim, turn 3G and cellular data on, reinsert sim and it's fixed, hasn't worked.

It seems to be a software problem, happening with both original Apple batteries and replacement batteries so I don't think it's really battery related.

Does anybody know of a fix, a permanent fix, this is something apple should be sorting but their support forums are screaming for a fix for this issue and it hasn't been resolved as far as I know.

    Thanks
