    Hey,

Going on a spin with a couple o mates up north (nothing heavy, 40miles per day, a few beers on the night in between - its mainly for beers!) for next month.

Another (non cycling) mate wants to join, but has a very limited budget (i.e. <200 euro) - what would you suggest (other than meet him in the pub :) )

    Options are:
    - Halfords (etc) + slicks
    - Second hand
    - Rent a bike (for a week or two to train, then on the weekend we do it)
    - Invest fixing up an old rust bucket mtb - i.e. new tyres/ service, probably a new chain as its rusted through etc

The problem is he is out in Galway.. I probably wont see him before we plan on doing it.. so any recommendations? Any bike shops to be recommended for servicing and/or 2nd hand bikes?

    Cheers,
    km

Most definitely second hand, there are plenty of good cheap bikes on donedeal which would suit.

Did the rental thing for a few days a couple of weeks back. Got a light enough hybrid, which was a bit of a pain after the road bike, but still much better than a MTB or heavy BSO. Came in at €12 per day, and I'd say you'd get a discount for long term rental. It's certainly an option, but 2nd hand might work out better. The big downside of the rental was that it was undergeared, so keeping up with even a modestly paced group on road bikes would be nigh on impossible.
