just after noticing slight crack(about 15mm both ways) going both ways on my rear mavic ksyrium wheel ,the crack is originating from where the spoke is attached to the rim, i not sure how long this is like or whether it getting longer but wondering is it ok to pedal away and also is it possible to get this repaired and is it expensive job as wheels are expensive set of wheels.

    Dafman,

Your wheel is unsafe at any speed.

Buy a new rim and throw out the old one.

If you get the same exact rim, you could lace and true it yourself. It's not that difficult.

It probably will be expensive to have someone else to do the job though.

Have someone look at it but it's probably toast. A wheel build isn't massively expensive. You shouldn't have to spend more than €30-€40. The bigger cost will be the rim itself. If they are an 'expensive set of wheels' and you want to replace like with like, it's obviously going to cost.

    £99.99 for the rim

getting somebody to build up a mavic rim might be tricky

take it to the shop you got it from might be a start

i wouldnt ride mine if they had a crack (i have the same wheels, scurries off to look)

My well used ksyrium rear rim died the same way. When i looked closely there were small cracks around 3 of the spoke eyelets, but nothing approaching 15mm. I'd play it safe and wouldn't ride a cracked rim.

they all go like that. I have been riding one with multiple cracks on the turbo for years and its still holding up.

Do it! They're great wheels - mine had a long but very tough life before the rim cracked. I certainly got good value out of them.

If you don't wear through the braking surface, as morana said, most wheels will give up at the spoke eyelet eventually.

Interesting to see this thread. I was cleaning my bike yesterday and noticed for the first time a crack on my Mavic Krysium Elite rear wheel. Photo attached.

I bought it end of June 2011, have not crashed and have not hit any deep potholes.

I haven't done massive km's by any means and got way more mileage out of my previous and far cheaper Planet X Model B rear wheel.

I splashed out on the Mavic Krysium Elite because of its reputation for toughness.

I won't be throwing it out or paying 100stg on a new rim and don't accept that all these wheels just go like that !

Anyway rant over for now, does anybody know if they come with a guarantee ? As far as I am concerned it is a defect in the manufacturing process.

Don't suppose anybody from Mavic is reading this ?

    Thanks Paul.

That's a decent crack to appear after a year! Looks like Mavic have a 1 year warranty, so i'd bring the wheel back to the shop and see if they can help you. Even if you're just outside the warrantly period, I'd argue that that crack didn't appear overnight.

There's no way the rim should fail so quickly.

I've had 2 sets of these wheels and have really liked them. I've found them to be solid and i got a lot of use from them, so my experiences have been positive. That said, a quick google shows that you're not alone - lots of other people seem to have had similar issues to yourself.

Thanks for suggestion Ryan, probably would have presumed no chance otherwise. Sent wheel back to Chain Reaction who sent it on to Mavic and it arrived back today with a brand new rim. Which means I'll have no problem buying Mavic again in the future :-)

Great news - I'm glad that worked out for you.

I'm not Ryan though - I'm much much slower than that Sherlock.
