Illness Benefit / Disability Allowance question

    Hi

    Background:

I am currently on illness benefit for a year. I have recently been diagnosed by my orthopedic surgeon as having multiple problems with both my hips, back and knee which will probably result in at least two surgeries one for hip and one for my back, maybe more.

I am now on a waiting list to see a specialist who does the type of surgery I need for my hip. As we know this could be quite a while as I am a public patient. Also my recovery time could be anything up to two years depending on the success of said surgery.

I was thinking of applying for Disability Benefit so that I could possibly do a springboard course next year as currently people on illness benefit cannot avail of springboard. It would be an online course only as my injuries do not allow me to travel.

    Now to the questions.

Has anyone has been in a similar position to above and been successful in applying for Disability Allowance ?

Is it worth my while applying for DA when I still have a year left on Illness Benefit ?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Definatly apply , at least you ll have your illness payment while your waiting an you ll be waiting a long time .

My story was similar , applied for DA while on illness and had to go on SWA when my illness ran out .Applied in Oct 2011 an got DA in may 2012 .

I was a lucky SoB as i got it without any problems but many others will tell you how hard a payment it is to get .
