Error on system bus - boom

Well there was no boom, but my laptop hasn't worked since one of the trips went down on the circuit it was plugged into. I thought nothing of the trip going down and next morning when I went to turn it on and got the message "error on system bus" on black screen followed by a nasty cascading effect of the error message... I'm thinking a power surge may have fried it

I tried turning back on... few clicks and beeps but nothing. The power light came on each time I turned it on but no fan or no noise bar the odd click. If it was plugged into the mains the light didn't come on, if it wasn't plugged in the light did come on. Tried powering it from the mains with the battery removed... nothing. I've since bought a new machine and it's in the post as my old one was 6 yrs old so was due an upgrade, but it never gave me any trouble all the same.

Is it possible that an internal fuse or something could have saved it or is it gone? I plan to try and use the hard drive as an external drive in my new machine and I've ordered a case enclosure for it to be adapted to usb. I would like to still use it if it's salvageable as there is a firewire port on it which would be very handy for work (my new machine won't have firewire or expansion slots).
