Wisdom teeth trouble

    Hey Guys,

I've 4 imapacted wisdom teeth that wont come outta my gums, so I was told I've to get surgery (Quoted about €2000 cause I don't have insurance or VHI)

Was having awful trouble with them before.

However, for the last few weeks I've noticed I've developed very bad gum disease, which I've been trying to deal with - which wont go away, aswell as that I'm getting very bad sore throats, headaches, ear aches, and an unwell stomach, so I think the infection is back from before.

Earliest I can see the dentist is next week. Anything anyone can recommend to help in terms of getting the infection under control until then? And curing the other effects that I've to face?

It took me a while to spot, because there was no pain in my jaw like their usually is when its acting up.

    Cheers,
    Cillian

    Sorry to hear op,

First off, your €2000 is mostly for a general anaesthetic and B&B in a private hospital. This job can be done safely and more comfortably outside of hospital in a clinic under iv sedation at a considerable saving to you...

Impacted wisdom teeth often cause local gum inflammation and infection called pericoronitis. It in itself will not give you gum disease around the other teeth, sure if you are run down and get a wisdom tooth infection- you may get a flare up of other issues but it is not directly related usually... The same goes for your throat, ears, headaches and stomach.... I wouldn't blame them all on your teeth and wouldn't expect them all to clear up after the teeth are out.

Best to see an oral surgeon to have the wisdom teeth assessed and go from there... In the meantime, keep everything super clean, lots of brushing, flossing, warm salt water mouth rinse etc etc

    Good luck,
    Os

I'd got the consult and was told exactly what I'd need done.

I managed to get an appointment for 12 today thank god! Cause I woke up this morning with a mouth full of blood.

IV sedation? Would that basically be local anesthetic? Because as far as I was informed, I have no choice but go under general, because the teeth wont break the gumline as they are running almost parallel to my jaw, so for that reason my jaw will need dislocation in order to slit the gum to get the teeth! :/

No you dont need a GA the proceedure for taking out the tooth is the same whatever anaesthetic you have and does not involve dislocating or breaking the jaw but removing some bone around the impacted tooth.

The GA is not for your benefit unless you like nausea, a sore throat and paying loads of money and taking loads of time off work. Sedation is safer, cheaper and has far less post operative complications.

Wisdom tooth problems do not present with a mouthfull of blood....

IV sedation is not akin to LA. It is the same intravenous agent used in hospitals when preforming scopes etc. It allows treatment to be completed in a safe and quick mannor outside of a hospital while avoiding an expensive and riskier GA. Most patients have little or no memory of the treatment afterwards.

You have not been given any other choice because the operator wants to do this under GA, not that you need this under GA, there is a difference.

Your jaw should not be dislocated during this procedure, it will involve a cut in the gum, some drilling and pressure and levering of the tooth but this does not need a GA.
