Hotels are expensive in Venice! The closer to st marks you get, the more expensive it gets. October won't be as expensive though.
Most hotels are pretty small and more like boutique style hotels so expect too much luxury and pools!
Can't give you any recommendations as I can't remember the names - sorry

well the good thing about venice is there is loads of hotels there and while it may be hard to find your one intially and the are all expensive+small i dont think there is any bad location, as time spent there is walking around anyway! just go for a go hotel you can afford i say.

I have stayed in the Giorgione Hotel twice. Lovely family run hotel. Handy for water taxis. Within a short walk of St. Marks Square.

The hotel can be pricy if you book direct but last time I got a great deal on booking.com. (I think I paid the same price for three nights in a suite for the same price as the hotel was quoting me for one night in a standard room).
