Sorry to bring up another 7 seater thread but torn between these two, which would you rate as the better 7 seater and why? Having trouble deciding, have driven both and both impress.

Renault is better equipped and cheaper, both have similar miles, both 1 year warranty.

2010 Grand Scenic 1.5Dci Dynamique Tom Tom

    2010 (New shape) Touran 1.6TDi S

No other suggestion please, have considered all the competition and it's down to one of these.

Wouldn't touch the Scenic with a barge pole - I have one (05) and have nothing but trouble with it. Too many gizmos causing trouble, our garage is on a monthly retainer. Trouble only started soon after warranty ran out, did get some expensive work on warranty after but only after I threatened the dealer with a trip to court.

Can't comment on the VW but I can assure you I won't be buying my next car from the Renault stable.

I too would not trust a Scenic pre 2008, the current model is meant to be a far safer bet by all accounts.

I hope so, as you can read I'm fairly bitter and twisted about French cars following the current experience. After one episode 40,000 km disappeared off the clock but it doesn't matter anyway as no one in their right mind would take it on and I'm too honest to pass the problem on elsewhere.

Our 05 Scenic has never seen a garage outside of the servicign I havnt done myself.

    ....indeed.

And a local parent to me has a Touran and it lives in the garage. In hindsight, he'd like his money back, but that ain't going to happen.

Which goes to show, stereotyping any car brand can be woefully inaccurate.

That, and the fact that the Touran is more akin to a van than a car, and for me, would make me pick the Renault. (had 3 x Renault's in the noughties, with no trouble either)

If it was just between the 2 : Touran Vs Scenic, I'd take the Touran. I've heard from several people regarding serious problems with the Scenic. If you want to buy a French brand, I'd recommend the Citroen C5 Picasso but the 1.6 Diesel engine is a tad underpowered. If you are open to other choices, I'd recommend the Ford SMax 1.8 TDi. Maybe more expensive, but a great motor with good resales.

    Was that the current model?

We find the Touran reliable but they can have problems (As all VW's) with the ABS unit. Dunno if they've fixed that in the newer models. The Touran is smaller than the Grand Scenic if you are going to use the 7 seats a lot. We picked it because it was smaller, (for parking etc) its actually shorter than a Passat. Also because we couldn't find a decent scenic at the time, lot of very rough ones around, the Tourans seem to be less abused, or maybe they are tougher I dunno. TBH if I was going to be using the 7 seats a lot I'd get something bigger than either of these. Neither of there have much of a boot with the last row up, but the Scenic has a bit more space. We actually preferred less gadgets as there was less to break. But the scenic is certainly better equipped, and thats nice in its own way. I liked driving the Scenic. The Touran is just a golf at the end of the day.

Which ever you get, get a good warranty. I reckon it come down to which you get the best deal on and which is the better condition, least miles.

    It was pre 2007 model.

The Touran for me without question. Not saying it is actually more reliable than the Renault but when it does break it will be easier and cheaper to fix.

Whoever said S-Max obviously hasn't experienced the amount of trouble I have seen with them. I think I'd actually take the Renault over an S-Max!

Picasso. Lovely car. Tourans are not well screwed together(considered one) and Scenics, well, anyway, current Picasso has 300,000km up, still going strong. Nice enough drive too.

I'd agree, Touran would be my choice. My brother has a Scenic and they are not the best quality wise. He's had a fair few problems.

I drove a couple of Tourans as hire cars while abroad and found them very comfortable and well built.

Curious why do you think that? I'm not the greatest fan of VW, but even the most abused ones I saw when shopping for one had everything working and still attached unlike other brands. Only Toyota Verso's seemed as sturdy to me.

    Reliability
Owners have reported a few small niggles and some minor electrical problems with the Touran but the majority of drivers submitting reviews to parkers.co.uk are happy with the car. The cabin is superbly screwed together, with no rattles or unexplained noises.

I think the biggest problem with Tourans, other then ABS issue, is they are very spartan, and even dull. While some will complain about French cars, I think all modern cars are over complex and as a result all makes get some niggles.

....the Touran I mentioned, an 08 has had......

    ...ABS unit
    ...PAS rack
    ...window regulators x 2
    ...injectors x 2

Apart from that it's been perfect ! :D

Yes, Renaults' not without their foibles: handbrake unit seems to be one, but the engine itself has a good rep.

Carsurvey.org - good website to look at a lot of owners reviews and how they rate their car without all the guff Parkers delivers - Tourans do not fare well......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

They are the same as Golfs and Passats, equipment and engines, so will have the same problems. VW's are very over rated when it comes to reliability. But those sites generally attract only those with problems. Hard to find a vehicle that doesn't have complaints listed against it. Thats the point of those sites for people to air their problems. TBH I found it hard to find any brand which doesn't have problems. When I bought mine toyota had the whole brake thing going on, there was some issue with S Max's. What are you meant to do!

As I said at the start...

Looked at People-carriers 4 yrs ago - Touran nice, BUT....no spare wheel - they give you a version of TyreWeld to get you to the next garage.

We bought a small (ie not Grand) Picasso - happy so far, but haven't done big mileage!

Quite common on a lot of MPV's and indeed modern cars in general. Dire idea if you ask me. The 5 seater touran has a spare though.

...yes, but no point in having a spare, and being short two seats.... :)
