    Hi Guys,

A question, Which car would be Better, a 00 reg Merc C180 or a 00 reg Volvo s40. Both 1.8l petrol

Dont do much driving, only really about 40 miles a week, odd trip down to limerick. Just like the look of both cars, Merc would be a slight preference but i am told the older model may not be the best.

Both cars in and around the same price also, not a huge diff anyway.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks,

At 12 years old it's all about the actual car.

As above, when looking at 12 year old cars, it's not really relevant which one was best when new, its their condition and how well they have been looked after up until now that matters.

Is the merc the old model(square body) or the newer model(round headlights)?

and in this case it is more Renault vs Mercedes. :pac:

Which one you'll like to see yourself in (or been seen in)?

Both cars are in reasonably good shape, Merc has one previous owner from new, Volvo had 2.

both have around 100k miles on them, both with NCT till mid next year.

personally i Like the merc, No one else does. Just wanted to see which one would be better,

also a any idea of MPG of them, Have been told by a few sources merc would be 32-36MPG , Volvo maybe 32-35 MPG.

    Thanks Guys

For reliability, I'd go for that. They are the last of the 'proper' mercs. The newer 203 shape is a nicer, much more modern car to drive, but they can be plagued with issues.

Yeah, I would suggest Merc too ;)

    good man, cheers.

yeah it was the older boxier version. Its a 00 with 95k Miles on it.

Jet black is the only problem, looks like a funeral car.

There was a nice lime green one going with black leather seats, no NCT though.

Drove one for nearly 6.5 years and the only issue i ever had was a flat tyre.

General wear and tear repairs will be higher though, front suspension components esp !

Near side was rebuilt 2 years ago at around 800 bucks, when the off side started banging twas time to put her out to pasture...lol

Either one could be a good buy assuming they were both serviced per the recommended schedule. Personally, I would go for the Merc, but make sure it has a full service history. If not, Walk Away. I also agree that the older model Merc can be more reliable than the newer models. I think Merc lost the plot a bit after that model - maybe due to cost cutting or moving factories.

Actually there was more Mitsubishi DNA in the S40 than Renault. Diesel engine was Renault, petrol engines were Volvo/Mitsubishi, chassis was also Mitsubishi.

I'd be concerned about rust on a Merc of that vintage though.
