Lost Oil Cap

    So,

A few weeks ago I was topping up the oil in my car and only just noticed that the top is now missing (I obviously forgot to put it back on it must have fallen on the road). I looked for it and can't find it.

Now I am wondering is this a major issue? I'll try get a new one at the weekend but is it going to cause any major issues like damage etc?

    Thanks in advance!

It depends on the car, on most, aside from oil splashing around the engine bay, it wouldn't do any harm. Some modern cars use crankcase pressure to control breather/emissions systems and if the cap is off you can get poor running and fault lights...but you'd have noticed by now if this was the case.

"Things" could fall in so it's not good to drive around with it like that.
You can get one cheap in a factors today. Or maybe even the local garage.

If you can't find the original go to any motor factors and ask them for a replacement 710:

If I'm lucky they might even throw in a free long wait ;)

    Nice try MCMLXXV :pac:

I forgot to my oil cap back on after topping up my Punto once. Amateur hour stuff, got one from the local scrap yard for next to nothing.

Good plan, thanks! Are they all roughly the same size? I've got a Hyundai Accent.

... bottle caps are all roughly the same size, you need one to fit though :)

Most older Japanese engines use the same size screw on caps.

No. Fcuking. Way. That guy can't be seriously driving along like that thinking everything's grand.

OP, once drove Ennis to Limerick in an '88 Mitsubishi Colt without the oilcap.
Car needed an engine wash afterwards. Was lucky enough to find the 710 wedged in the engine compartment.
Definitely wouldn't drive a single meter without the cap.
