    SmackDown:

    * It's announced that a new #1 contender will be named after a Fatal 4-Way with Rey Mysterio, Alberto Del Rio, Kane and Daniel Bryan in the main event.

    * New WWE Intercontinental Champion The Miz opens the show but is interrupted by Christian. Christian wants a rematch tonight and gets it.

    * The Miz defeated Christian in a solid back and forth match with several near falls. Miz got the win after a quick roll up.

    * Alberto Del Rio becomes the new #1 contender by defeating Kane, Daniel Bryan and Rey Mysterio in a Fatal 4 Way. Del Rio got the win with help from Ricardo Rodriguez while Rey Mysterio was getting ready to win the match.

Where's Yoshi been? That's the first time I've seen his name pop up in a while. And nice to see them at least potentially doing something with Cesaro.

The sooner WWE and all of us forget that mini feud that nobody cared about he and Aksana had with Teddy Long the better.
Have to say I was hoping someone else would be the no.1 contender for SummerSlam is it? besides Del Rio

Who else would have won? Kane and Mysterio are babyfaces while Bryan is getting dumped into a feud with Charlie Sheen if Raw was anything to go by. Del Rio was the obvious choice outside of a multi man match.

I wonder who Cody Rhodes feuds with next? I kinda thought WWE might push him up to WHC title scene

When is Orton and Barrett expected back?

Orton is due back in a fortnite iirc and I read somewhere recently that they may hold off on Barrett until after Summerfest.
Hard to know with Rhodes I thought him losing the IC was a sign of him getting a briefcase but now he is the middle man in the ongoing Sheamus vs Ziggler feud.

Maybe they are waiting for Barrett to comeback for a feud with Sheamus

This makes absolute zero sense to me.

Swagger did the same recently. Don't know what they are at having him kill nobodies then get beat up by jobbers. Maybe they realised he sucks?

They had him sell for Hawkins and Reks which was just crazy. Any aura he may have had (or had any chance of getting) may already be gone.

Mahal gets the upper hand, Ryback, being a hard ****er makes a comeback, Mahal runs away before he gets murdered like everyone else.

    sounds fair enough.

and no announcement of the new Smackdown GM? or is AJ GM for Smackdown too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,478 ✭✭✭✭gnfnrhead

AJ was only announced as Raw. Either Vince made a mess of it, or they have something else in mind. Holla, Holla, Playa :pac:

I'm pretty underwhelmed by another Sheamus/Del Rio match but I suppose Summerslam will be sold on other matches and Ziggler should be about to win the title soon enough.

For those who just read the spoilers, it's worth at least watching the backstage confrontation between Sheamus and Bryan. :D It's at 31:30

Really good smackdown overall. I think we might see a triple threat match between Sheamus, Mysterio and Del Rio at Summerslam. Clear tension between Mysterio and Del Rio and Mysterio would feel hard done by after Rodriguez' interference.

That said, triple-threat matches usually have 2 heels and 1 face so I'm not sure.

The Fatal 4 Way is an excellent TV match. Some good near falls. Kane blocking the tap out from Del Rio was cool. All 4 guys gave it their all.

Good show overall. Jericho coming out in Zigglers Tshirt was great. They should have a really good match. Jericho seems to be really enjoying himself since coming back from that suspension.

Was going to say the EXACT same thing but add the Debbie Downer point about Rey seems to really struggle getting back up to his feet despite doing all his usual moves. Hopefully doing that becomes easier when he shakes the ring rust off as he has the best babyface comeback in the world.

Yeah, I'm a little bit disappointed that Rey hasn't been injected into something a little more exciting. Jericho has been great the last couple of weeks. He's very good at being the antihero.

    Very good Smackdown I thought.

Admittedly I skipped Ryback/Mahal but Sandow venting on Tatsu following events earlier in the week (continuity yay!) and four matches relevant to championships - what with Cesaro seemingly lined up for a US title shot - made for a satisfying experience. Five if you include From The Vault.

Now try to maintain that level every show please, WWE. Although it's a shame They neglected to do anything with the tag division this week.

And apparently AJ's just GM of Raw..?

They made reference to her during the show, saying that she tweeted about a meeting she was at at Titan Towers and that there were big changes coming or something. She'll be on both shows next week I predict. As to what she'll do on them or where she'll take her new role is another thing, but I think she'll be able to pull it off. She's been on a steady rise this year and seems to be able to take on any role or situation that she's been given.

That's what Vince McMahon said on Raw 1000...AJ is only GM of Raw.
In the interest of making Raw 1001 as great as it can be and every week thereafter, allow me to introduce you to the new General Manager of Monday Night Raw..AJ.

I'm getting bored of the Ziggler/Sheamus thing already. If Ziggler is so hesitant to cash in his MITB on a conscious Sheamus then why do it at all? Even if he did win the World title he'd still have to face him again because of Sheamus' rematch clause.

I'd really like to see a MITB storyline where the holder actually has a good plan, rather than just cashing in on whoever the current champion is. It'd be cool see a storyline involving where the bides his time, waiting for a champion to be crowned that he knows he can beat. That way, when the rematch comes around, he'll have a good chance of successfully defending his title.

Yeah but with the rematch clause, all he'd have to do is lose by disqualification. Keep the title, Sheamus used up his rematch, case closed.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,669 Mod ✭✭✭✭DM_7

Ziggler wants to be champion as soon as possible. Thats the angle WWE are using.

a guy saying 'oh I won't beat him if we had a rematch so I will wait till another wrestler wins before I cash in' makes the MITB holder and the Champ he cashes in on look weak. Wouldn't be the best Angle to go with imo.

Yeah but then we'd hear somethin along the lines of:

"Now playa, I see what you been tryin to pull here. So ah'm givin da Irish Warrior one more shot, and if you attempt to get counted out or disqualified playa, you will be stripped of the heavyweight title. Holla holla!"

Would love to see ADR win the title and then have Ziggler cash in on him.

Oh, I really enjoyed Smackdown. New guys Sandow and Cessaro looking good.

I okay with Miz getting a win. He actually had a pretty good match.

Also fine with the Ziggler, Sheamus stuff. Really liked Jericho's involvement. The match between Ziggler and Jericho should be great.

Cody needs something to do. He is starting to look very big so hopefully wellness won't be calling for him.

But, if we were to continue on about how this storyline would play out, it'd probably lead to a No DQ match being announced by someone like Teddy Long, as Stereomaniac pointed out.

I just think it'd make for an interesting and relatively fresh storyline. I'm getting tired of the same old cash ins, the whole unpredictable aspect of it has become predictable.

Wouldn't cashing in on a vulnerable opponent be considered weak as well though? At least here the MITB holder would look smart.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,166 ✭✭✭Stereomaniac

But don't the look weak every time they cash them in? The exceptions of course being Rob Van Dam & John Cena this week. The whole thing is a bit too samey, while in recent years the Royal Rumble doesn't seem to hold nearly as much weight. Also, I think having 2 briefcases is a bit problematic as well. But that's a whole other thing, which I know people on here agree with, they need to get rid of the World Heavyweight title someone in the future.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,669 Mod ✭✭✭✭DM_7

I don't consider waiting till the best time to cash in as making the contract holder look weak.

Its not an aknowledgement of inferiority to cash in on a weakened opponent. Its the smart thing to do.

Waiting for an opponent considered weaker even when at 100 percent makes two people look bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,478 ✭✭✭✭gnfnrhead

The only way I could see that working would be if a heel held the case and was able to constantly beat a babyface on the same or a higher level.

For arguments sake, Big Show has the case and always beats Mysterio. Show ensures Mysterio wins the title and announces his cash in. Full of confidence, he still loses and Mysterio keeps the title against all the odds. Mysterio looks great having finally beaten him but then Big Show would have to go on a rampage to avoid damage.

It's doable, but not really worth it. If one thing doesn't go to plan, everyone involved looks weak.

With Smackdown and iMPACT!, with other bits here and there, there was a lot of really good wrestling on TV this week.

Admittedly, that was entertaining. But it's just annoying to wonder how long it'll drag on now.
