I see in this article that the government have sold 17 of their ministerial cars for a total of €44k - average of €2,600 each.

Does anyone know the details of the sale?

Someone's making more than a few quid out of that anyway. They might have had to get rid of them very quickly though, seems awfully low though.

Waiting to hear the buyer was a relative/close friend of high ranking government minister:rolleyes:

I'm sure they wouldve being all high milers and driven hard, but probably maintained pretty well.
Wonder what cars they were but I doubt they were worth close to € 2600 each.
I'd imagine triple that at least!

For all the conspiracies.......I'd imagine it was this auction.

edit: prices are not surprising given the age and mileages. Watch out for them on Donedeal with a 'fresher' mileage!

Would you give 2600 plus auction fees for a 04 Merc petrol 2.6 litre with over 300k miles on it ? No thanks !

Also remember that some of these could be damaged or non-runners. The numbers quoted seem to be an average, so by definition some sold for more than this.

If the cars were sold at public auction, no-one can really complain that the prices were not fair, as anyone could have attended / bid.

More like a friend of a public/civil servant or agent thereof.

Looking at that list nah I'm alright!! They got what they were worth so, any bets they'll reappear with new mileage!!!

Some of them went for too much IMO.

Some of those cars sold made way over what should be the asking price with such high miles.

If anyone wants a conspirasy theory why wouldn't someone put the mileage up on the clock before the auction so a mate could but the car at lower price?

Your post doesn't make much sense. Why would you increase the mileage on a car before it is sold?

To make it cheaper for someone who actually knows the genuine mileage is much lower.

    ....

... and quite likely some for less than the 2600 mentioned. The mileage for the O5s would be km too presumably.

The majority / all ,of that stuff is suitable for export only so 2600 is good money on average.

No conspiracy or dodgy dealings here. That auction was made public back in March or maybe even earlier. Open to everyone and anyone, not just to friends of ministers. I was tempted to travel up to see if I could buy something nice but was put off by the high mileage, high road tax and the fact that most of them were petrol rather than diesel.

Will the buyer pay the VRT that the government didn't have to?

Just curious, is there much export of cars out of Ireland? To where?
