I want my car louder, any suggestions? (Air filter perhaps?)

    Greetings

    Right lads, basically I want my Peugeot 307 1.6 petrol engine to sound a bit louder when I rev etc, but I don't want it as loud as an induction kit. I heard that changing the air filter can make a difference, is this true?

    Also I have a standard air filter at the moment so would it be easy enough for me to change it myself?

    Anyone know where I can get an air filter that makes a difference? Or have any other ideas of what I can change?

    Last question, and most importantly, how loud does this make it compared to the normal one? Is this as loud as an actual induction kit (as I do not want that). I'm looking for one that is loud, but not as loud as an induction kit.

    When you say 'as loud as an induction kit', what kit fitted to what car have you heard? Every engine type and induction kit type will sound different.

    An induction kit is an air filter but with a cold air feed built in.

    Once you are still using the standard airbox, then, regardless of what brand of filter you use, the sound will still be the same as factory.

    No it's not. Most induction kits merely replace the standard airbox and snorkel (which generally are very good) with a cone filter that usually takes in more hot air (due to engine proximity) and produces more noise

    Thats a cone airfilter, not an induction kit. The term 'induction kit' has simply become the mcdonalnds car park name for any cheap cone filter these days.

    Stand closer to the car and have somebody else rev it. If you're driving, leave the Windows down. If you do something to the engine, don't blaze past my gaff at 4 in the morning.

    Cone filter should make the engine a little louder.

    A metal intake makes it that little bit louder depending on resonance point.

    you could put a cone filter which will make it slightly louder, its more noticeable on older cars which have less noise insulation in the engine bay

    Put in a large head steel cone filer for best results. Of course, results will vary depending on the car you put it into. It is recommended to put a cold air feed in for best results. It's a very easy install, taking less than 30 mins. You might also get a nice suction sound if your engine is a a good one. You will get maybe 5 horse power difference, so it wont turn your car into a ferrari. Your other option is to get a different exhaust installed to the cat. Or do both. Here is my example:

    That FTO sounds great but you can`t really compare a V6 Mivec and a 1.6 Peugeot engine in any way. :D
    Off topic but isn`t that narrow elbow restricts airflow on the throttle body??

    tbh op, you might get a car with a deeper note if you put a silly exhaust on it but i doubt it'll be well and truely louder as theirs only so much noise to come out the back cleanly, sure you can decat and run a 3.5 or bigger system but its alot like singing, you can only go so high/low until you reach you're limit and it sounds like crap.

    manufactuers work hard to get a decent note out of even the most bland and economic motors on the road... concider that alone before you go making her sound like pretty much every boy racer fart mobile out their.

    No. It's the oe airflow and is not narrow, but it does look narrow in the pic. I will be changing it soon with some nice blue silicone. See a different angle below.

    Dont use one of those ****e cone filters, they sound louder but lose power as the engine bay is hot, Using your original airbox you can put in a k&n or pipercross panel filter, it wont be much louder but will give you a 'gruntier' noise(I just made that word up) dont expect any more power though, I laugh when people say there panel filter gave them 20hp!

    The problem with the cone filters is heat soak. It will be drawing in warm air from the engine. I've seen some of them fitted with a shield to prevent heat being drawn in. One other solution might be to run a cold air feed up to the filter.

    the only folks who get 20 hp off them generally have a high end car and either a) dont actually need them... b) already have a whopping great big turbo/supercharger attached and well.. why not ? overkill wherever you can.
