Coke Zero and Diabetes

I really like Coke Zero and it's one of the few things I regard
as ok for me with diabetes.
After all, it has no sugar, no carbs of which are sugars, no calories worth talking about, a trace of sodium so what's the prob?
My nurse at the clinic tells my missus to disregard all that and to empty all my cans down the sink and buy no more.
    But why?
There's nothing in Coke Zero but caffeine and a few e-numbers.
    Any thoughts?

There is an idea about that artifical sweeteners (in Coke zero) give an insulin response but it hasn't been proven one way or the other.
Partly because there are so many different sweeteners and party because the studies were done in a variety of different situations (some of which were done outside the body)

    One study here.

Review of Sweeteners insulin response here

Nurse is applying broad stokes here imo.

You could always have some Coke zero & see how it affects YOUR blood sugar? i.e. test your self.

I'm ok with this discussion continuing as long as it stays pretty general in nature. If it strays into specifics/medical advice then I'm afraid we'll have to lock it. There is an interesting discussion to be had here though I feel.

    Cheers

I did read once that stimulating your body with sweetners (even artifical ones) can prompt your body to crave more which obviously isn't great. Espcially if they are not artficial in nature.

Fizzy pop is not great for the stomach or the teeth either.

Bizzarley I actually use a bottle of diet (and full sugar) coke to clean stubborn pans and toilets so the nurse was being helpful in a way!

My brothers diabetic (type 1) and for years Ive told him to stay away from soft drinks (diet or otherwise)....its not just the sugar but also the aspartame (which is like rat poison) etc....

Anyway for 6 months hes been off soft drinks - replacing it with freshly squeezed lemon in still mineral water (ballygowan etc)...

In the last six months his skin has cleared up, he's dropped about 1.5 stone and he hasnt looked healthier in years.

Stay away from ALL soda - its absolute 100% posion.
