    A few of my friends did it a few years ago in Kilkenny (Ormonde College). It will gain employment in airports, private security firms, door security and help with getting into the army and guards.

    But also the FETAC Level 5 will get you into a 3rd level.

    The FETAC Level 5 alone will not qualify you to get employment in private security or to an Garda Siochana. You will still have to meet the Garda Siochana requirements if and when they start recruitment.

    To work in the private security industry you must also hold a private security license from the Private Security Authority.

    In order to obtain a license you will need to have completed certain FETAC modules, Garda Vetting and paid the license fee. The following is taken from the PSA website

    Licences are required by individuals working in the Door Supervisor (Licensed Premises) and Security Guard (Static) sectors. Licensing of other sectors is currently being developed and will be announced in due course.
    APPLYING FOR AN INDIVIDUAL (EMPLOYEE) LICENCE

    Applications for an individual licence require the following:

    · Completed Application Form

    · Prescribed Licence Fee (see COST OF AN EMPLOYEE LICENCE below)

    · Copy of Birth Certificate, Passport or Driving Licence

    · Completed Garda Vetting Form

    · Foreign Criminal Record Certificate if you have spent 6 months or more in a foreign jurisdiction

    · Evidence of attainment of the required training qualification (see TRAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR AN EMPLOYEE LICENCE below)

    Most colleges include the modules you need to apply for a PSA license as part of the course but double check. Be very careful as the Level 5 major award and the minor Level 4s that are requested by the PSA are changing this year. Where are you thinking of applying to ?

    The list of modules does not seem to include any of the modules (Security Industry Awareness, Guarding or Door Security) which you need to obtain a license;

    - Legal Studies
    - Security Systems and Procedures
    - Garda Preparation Course (Workshops)
    - Communications
    - Behavioural Studies
    - Word Processing
    - Safe Pass Course (Optional)
    - Customer Service
    - Communications
    - Self Defence (Workshops)
    - First-Aid

    The Private Security Authority states that for a license you require the following modules;

    Security Guard (static) Licence

    Basic Guarding Skills FETAC Level 4 Minor Award (L12407 or C10266) or Security Industry Awareness FETAC Level 4 Minor award (C10164) or equivalent.

    Door Supervisor (licensed premises) Licence

    Door Security Procedures FETAC Level 4 Minor Award (L12275 or C 10267) or equivalent.

    I would also query the value of the Garda Preparation course as no-one knows the application process for the next stage of Garda recuritment or when it will be held.

    Thanks but what course would you recommend as an alternative?
