Hi i was looking to sell / trade my golf anyhow i have been offered 11500 as a trade in, going to do the deal on thurs, should i try sell to someone for the same 11500 in cash thus cutting out the middle man and letting someone get the car at the trade in price instead of the extra that the dealer is going to sell it at? he is bound to add 1 or 2k when he goes to sell isnt he?, and it wouldnt make much difference to him if he got the car or 11500 cash would it? i guess it would have to be a quick sale so it probably wont happen but it would be a good idea if there was a website for something like this?
am i getting my point across here?

Just ask for a straight deal price on the day in the event that you sell your own car. simple.

there is no advantage to me selling private at 11500, the person buying would be the one to benefit, just thinking in an ideal world the punter would benefit instead of the dealer if you know what i mean :D

When I sold cars i'd often give the customer a both a cost to change and a straight deal price. That way, they knew exactly how much they needed to get privately for their own car to be better off. If they got more before their new car arrived then great, if they didn't then they'd at least know that I wasn't gouging them.

@ readytosnap - You need to find out the maximum cash discount on the car you're interested in and subtract that from the €11.5k - that's the price you need to get privately to break even.

Wrong. If you can sell it for 11,500 privately you can go back to the dealer and get a cash discount as you have no trade-in. Expect a few percent off depending on the make/model.

thanks for the replies, the car im buying is 11500, i am doing a straight swap (minus my alloys & parrot) as far as i am concerned the deal is a done deal, the point i am trying to make is selling privately my car has to be worth more than 11500, i am accepting 11500 from the dealer, if someone offered me 11500 cash i would take it then give the cash to the dealer and drive off into the (alleged) sunset,i am happy with the deal, i did try to sell privately for 13500 didnt get a lot of genuine interest but did get a lot of timewasters. it was just an idea that someone else other than the dealer could get a bargain (in my eyes). just a silly idea i guess.

I was wondering the same, but a little voice inside me was saying "don't open that door!"

Then I think you are mad not to go sell it privately. I know it's hassle but a Golf is an easy sell and you will save a few quid in the process.
I reckon the Golf must be a fair whack more valuable than the car (at least 2k) you are swapping for. Else the dealer (and they ain't charities, believe me) would not do a straight swap unless he saw a quick turnaround and profit on your own car.

I think OP you are not quite on the right track. If you dont want to improve your deal, dump the car at the dealer and be done.
If you think the car can achieve 11.5 on a private sale, only do it if you want to save some cash. You might not realise that the dealer will have 1k built into the advertised price to allow him to give you a reasonable trade in price. Going in with no trade in, you will knock money off. So if for example you sell Privately for 11.5k, you should be able to keep 1k and still walk away with the new car.

^^^^^ HE's right you know. Plus, if you can maybe get 12K for your own privately you are then up €1,500 compared to the current deal.
Whatever car you are buying, this surely can'y be the only one for sale, so take the time to sell your's and then go out to buy. If this particular car is gone then there will be others available.

Make sure when you take into account a private sale that you will have to spend time and money entertaining timewasters who will want to test drive your car, and alot of them will rag it.

Trade in price they give on your car is useless m8. The price you need to look in to: " change price ".

They can give you a trade in value of 50k on your golf, but the car you will try to trade for will be 70k. Garages will bend you over and won't even kiss you.

It doesn't make any sense, to me at least. Why would you want to pay more for your new car than the garage would take?

Trade in your car, don't look back.

If you're happy with the price, go for it.

Don't worry about doing random strangers favours by selling them your car...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,330 ✭✭✭readytosnap

i dont want to pay more, thing is i am happy with the deal too many timewasters and scammers trying to sell privately so i am just giving up i am willing to take the 11500 offered by the garage end of. was just thinking if someone was in the market then they cud also have it for 11500 and if i turn up with cash abnd get a few quid all the better but that wasnt the reason for asking original question

I know, but many potential buyers won't bother to find out.

It would sell a million times quicker if you took all the 'extras' off

The dealer is willing to do a swap with an agreed value of 11.5k, most likely because in reality they value your car higher so there's margin for them to make money. If you sell your car and walk in to them with 11.5k cash they'll most likely tell you to take a hike as the deal is no longer worth the same money to them.

    In its simplest form.

They value your car at maybe 13k.
They offer a straight swap agreeing value of 11.5k (lets say whatever car you're getting is actually worth that).
They have a 1.5k buffer to get it ready for sale and get a little profit for their efforts.

Now if you walk in with 11.5k cash where's their incentive to do the deal when their profit has been wiped out?

The €11.5k is the trade-in value, not the cost to change.

€0 is the cost to change, whether it's a good deal or not depends on what the op is swapping for

I'm guessing a jeep of some sort, like a pathfinder or something odd

Going by the OP - there is no cost to change. Its a straight swap minus his wheels and Parrot kit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 302 ✭✭GiftGrub100

From the OP's Done Deal AD:

"Paint, wind deflectors, car has best engine 122bhp not the underpowered 80bhp on the majority of Golfs,so lots of smooth power and low c02.This Car has never been abused. I DO NOT WANT TO SWAP,no timewasters please"

I DO NOT WANT TO SWAP - what does he think he is doing ?
