Audi A4 to a Golf Gti?

Ive a 2004 Audi A4 130 bhp 6 speed, with NCT till April 2014, 105,000 miles and a full service history,

But lately I've gotting a real bad itch for a mk5 golf gti

My commute for work is 10,000 miles a year

and for pleasure you could add in another 5000 miles there,

What kind of money would I be giving trading in my against a 2005 or 2006 Golf Gti?

The Golf would have to have leather seats if that makes a difference :pac:

or am I deluded thinking of getting a Gti when I do 15,000 miles a year?

    Thanks

I would regard that as small mileage. Ive been running turbo petrol audis for years doing anything from 10 to 25k miles per year.
I dont find the petrol costs so bad but Ive a feeling that coming from a diesel, you will dump the golf again is months as the fuel useage will be 'different'.

I only saw 1 nice 06 GTI with Black leather seats for sale when i went looking, nice example had 80,000 miles but was well kept and was a manual, guy wouldn't budge off of €8,995

    Expensive cars

Yes the audi can do can 600 miles easy on a full tank of diesel including driving it 'hard'

Where as the Gti would prob only do 300 miles on a full tank would take a bit of getting used to alright but still its just one fill up a week,

Could you not have tempted him with cash ?

I'd be prepared to pay 4k max with the Audi for a safe 06 one

    Am I way off ?

I don' think they're that expensive for the amount of car you get for the money. Also considering that they cost nearly €40k with a few options.

Most Irish ones are spartan spec though

Taking it easy (consistent 120km/hr, 6th gear with very little acceleration) on a long mainly motorway trip in my manual MkV GTi I still struggle to get 35 mpg. And that's deliberately taking it easy to save fuel on a long trip. If you're doing 130-140km/hr rather than 120km/hr you'll be getting less than 30mpg. With an enthusiastic right boot and a lot of urban driving you can easily drop your average economy down to 23 mpg like me.

I posted up here recently, a mate of mine got a 05 Gti 90,000 miles, leather, air con manual with full Vag service history including timing belt kit done for €6,600 cash and he loves it, he moved from a daysul couldn't do the tractor thing any more..

Not bad for a 200hp petrol turbo in fairness, bet you get more fun than a 130hp tractor..;)

A GTI is also less likely to kill you than a non Lsd/Esp Focus ST that needs balancing :p

But as LM says when buying private only buy something you can sell the day after w/o making a loss

Definitely. I refer you to the aforementioned enthusiastic right boot and 23 mpg average. :-D

And given the original new price there's some real bargains to be had on relatively recent low mileage cars with a full service history.

With a definite 10k mile commute and at least another 5k for weekend driving I reckon you'd struggle to accept the costs involved.

At the end of the day it's a numbers game, go figure it out. By that I mean, compare fuel costs, insurance and all that and see if you can afford it. Be realistic with your mpg figures though...

I agree with this, I'd an alfa 156 and changed to an alfa gtv.

The mpg difference on long runs is 45 mpg versus 30mgp with GENTLE driving for the gtv.

On short runs, it's down to about 24 mpg.

I'd never ever run the gtv on the mileage I did in the 156 especially at current fuel prices

That's the sensible side, now on the insensible side, while I've never driven a GTI, I've a small yearn to.

If you really want it, and do your sums and can cope with up to three times your current fuel bill, go for it.

You'll never forget the fun of driving a car you really really want.

However, that fun might mean you go for a LOT of extra drives.

I've been disciplined with the GTV and am about 2k over my estimated 10k per year mileage, but it's great fun. Doesn't help I've a parking space working in Dublin city centre!

It's 100% worth it though if you enjoy driving, i was pretty apprehensive before i got my ST but in fairness it's grand and can get 30mpg if you want im sure a GTI can get 35mpg easily and i have heard of some people getting near 40mpg with mapped ones on long runs.

I'll put it this way my auld lad(is on his 7th avensis the last 4 diesel) said my car was well worth the tax (twice what you will pay on a GTI) and fuel and actually told me he was glad i finally got a "sensible" car :pac:

    Lol

    Ha ha very true!
So would anyone recommend getting these remapped? Would fuel economy also improve?

    Remap is a must.

I may be letting go of my '06 Candy White Mk5 GTI soon enough unfortunately. I've done 30k kms in the past 12 months, largely due to work. Have it 2.5 years and still really enjoy driving it!

Regarding the fuel.....I consistantly get 600+ kms from the 55 litre tank. Two weeks ago I was working in Donegal for two days. I got over 700 kms out of that tank!

It's pretty bad. My late 90's 190hp 2.5l v6 (N/A) will do 33 cruising at 120 and ~25 when hooning it around the city/back roads.

It's also a heavier car than the GTI.

I normally get around 31 to 32mpg from mine and that's mostly long runs with a few short trips mixed in. The absolute most I ever got was 712kms from a tank which works out a little under 35mpg but that was being crazy economical all long runs and some of it was driving at 100km/h on a motorway, also I dove 40kms of the 712 kms with the computer saying 0kms to next fuel stop. I usually get around 600kms per tank.

Doing more mixed driving than I do I think 30mpg would be good going.

Do you only do motorway mileage? The only time I ever manage more than 550KM is when I do more than half a tanks worth of motorway driving.

I find driving on normal roads at consistent speed more economical than motorway driving, once you pass 100kmh I see a noticeable increase in consumption.

Personally I would struggle to justify running a GTI doing the op's mileage, I do less and when you put in 90 euro of petrol two weeks in a row I struggle to justify it myself.

That is a fair point, but drive a GTI like you should and you won't see near 30mpg. Also the OP is coming from a 60mpg diesel too so the change in fuel costs will be much greater.

No, I do very mixed miles. I don't have the lightest right foot either (but far from the heaviest as well), but you struggling to get over 550 seems very odd. I think there are only 3 or 4 occasions over the past few years where I would have noticed such little mileage!

Thanks for all the replys :)

I normally drive at 100 km/h on my commute

In 6th gear the A4 is ticking over at less than 2000 RPM

Gti owners What RPM in 6th gear is the Gti at doing 100 km/h ?

    Thanks again

It's quite low considering. I remember posting figures on a thread about a year or so ago that addressed that topic, and I think it is around the 2,650 - 2,700 rpm mark.

Mine has a sunroof, 3-door, manual gb, 18" Monzas and has tartan knickers. Leather in heat was never my thing. ;)

Passed NCT a few months ago, expires Feb-14 I think. Full service history. It is full VW history up to 18 months ago, but I have a very good indy mechanice so since then I have been buying VW OEM parts and bringing them to him.

It's due a service again, and tax is up soon. Depending on whether I sort those myself soon, I couldn't say for sure what I'd expect right now, I haven't given it too much thought and I haven't looked at the current market. It has 130k kms on it. That's 20k kms a year, so about average.

Checked in mine this evening at 100km/h it was at about 2,300rpm in 6th.
