mozilla thunderbird and open office

has anyone used these, would you recommend them, or would you recommend anything else except office 2010 as its too expensive.

I did use Open Office but changed to Libre Office when all the developers left Open Office. It's continued on from where they left off in Open Office and is in constant development.

Thunderbird is great, I also use it. The Mozilla foundation have stopped developing it, they leaving it to the community, but that shouldn't turn you off. Like Firefox, there are lots of addons for it making it miles better than Outlook Express

It really depends on your needs. If you do require your documents to be 100% compatible with MS Office, then alternatives are rather useless.

Personally I find OpenOffice (or rather LibreOffice in my case) a bit slow, I much prefer SoftMaker Office (not free) and Atlantis Word Processor ($35), a must have if you're into ebooks.

Kingsoft Office is another freebie, a rather blatant Microsoft Office clone from China.

Oh, and if doesn't have to be a "suite", have a look at AbiWord, Scribus and Gnumeric.

As for Thunderbird, there's nothing wrong with it unless you'll have to deal with MS Exchange.
