Test Call to 999 & 112 - Nuisance?

We've recently installed IP phones at work in laboratories that are configured for emergency call out only. The issue is, in order to test their function, I will have to call 112 and 999 for test purposes to ensure the emergency services can be reached. Would this be considered a nuisance call by emergency services? Is there a protocol for this purpose?

It's not supposed to be used for anything other than emergencies, however if you contact BT (who have the contract) I'm sure they'll be able to help you.

As stated above, talk to these people first and it should be doable.

I think 997 is the test number for system configuration.

I'm sure if you just dial it, explain to the operator what you are doing and hang up, the whole thing would take less then 10 seconds, hardly going to kill someone is it?

    This too shall pass.

Depends on how busy the system is. There was a case in USA recently where a disabled woman stuck in bed while her house burned down died, when she rang 911 she was put on hold because there was too many calls coming in.

The main organisation switch number identifies from all outgoing calls made from our organisation. A call that is not an emergency can incur a charge to the organisation, so this was the reason for my query. It seems following some investigation, that 997 is the number provided by the Emergency Call Answering Service for test purposes.

Slightly off topic- but i didn't see the need to start a new thread.

Would the NAS / DFB Paramedics be annoyed with certain calls. For example, I was walking home tonight, through a lane way and found an unconscious male there . Zero Response etc(checked breathing, airway etc) after this I called 999 and waited with him. Just as the ambulance arrived he came around, jumped up and stumbled off. The lads spoke to him for a min or two, but he was determined to just go home. They hopped back in the bus and drove off. I apologized to them for 'wasting' their time, but they said no bother. Obviously I would never leave an unconscious person on the ground without checking/calling, but similar situations have happened a few times before, and i always just feel like i've wasted their time or taken that crew away from something 'more important'. Do Crew get annoyed with this, or is it just one of those things of better safe than sorry?

No they don't (shouldn't). The one time you don't call for that person on the ground....it may very well be life and death.

Generally not, and especially in the case you described where you actually checked the person first!

It's amazing the amount of people who drive past someone asleep on the footpath and call for an ambulance without first stopping, checking the person or asking them if they want an ambulance!

Probably off the subject BUT I constantly have phone calls to my mobile by a pervert. He rang up asking about using one of my Stallions on his mare (I do not usually breed from them) I told him this but he told me he had the same breed of horse and was desperate to get it covered, so after giving him details of the Stallions he asked for my address and directions. OK left it at that, then a few day's later he rings up asking what colour the Stallions 'meat and veg' were and how big and what girth they was! I gave him loads of abuse and threatened him with the Guard.
His mobile number shows up then he rings from a private number. We pass the phone around and we all give him abuse.
Having spoken to other lady owners of Stallions it turns out this guy is well known for this sort of perverted pastime.

Problem is that I can handle this but what if he does it on a young girl or a lone woman?

Will the Gardi do anything or just laugh if I report this perv?

This is off the original topic but abusive calls are an offence as far as I'm aware and you can report this to the Gardaí.
For all those who think should I or shouldn't report something. Report it. Leave it to the Guards to decide whether or not it's worth their time, if it isn't, they are obliged to tell you so in a polite manner, if they laugh in your face or don't treat you with courtesy then you have grounds to report them to their ombudsman. They are your public servant, treat them with respect and they will treat you with respect back. It's their job.

    This too shall pass.
