I am wondering if it is worth my while changing out my Tiagra Groupset on my €1000 Trek bike and replacing with Ultegra, i wouldnt be buying a new Groupset as i believe this would cost more than the bike itself, but rather look for second hand ultegra pieces and swap out as and when i purchase, when i asked this question of my local bike shop they said id be better off to just buy a new bike with the ultegra groupset, can someone share their thoughts on what they have done, what it costs etc and what they would advise.

    Listen to your bike shop.

Is this newer Tiagra? If so, it's 10 speed so all you are really getting is a small weight reduction and slightly different levers. Not worth the cost really.

What are you hoping to achieve? I don't mean that in any sort of condescending way, but why are you looking to swap stuff out? Looks? Performance? Weight?

I'd just start saving for a nicer bike rather than upgrading the Trek as you go.

thanks for the advice, to be honest i was thinking of changing it out for cleaner smoother shifting as i find the tiagra chugs a bit but thats probably more down to bad shifting by me. yes its the 10 speed tiagra i have.

It's unlikely to be anything to do with your shifting methods: it's a mechanical system that does not have opinions on your shifting methods. It may simply need slight adjustment, cleaning or lubrication. Higher end groupsets may shift slightly better, but it's really weight reduction and improved ergonomics and aesthetics that you pay for.

There is nothing wrong with Tiagra, I have it and it shifts perfectly. Good enough for racing. You just need to learn how to maintain it. Its not difficult once you get the knack.
