    hey,
I don't come from a horse background so maybe someone could give an opinion on this.

How in a maiden do bookmakers price up horses, last week there was maiden and three unraced horses were sp 100/1 and 1000/1 on the exchanges. One of them was by Rock of Gibraltar, how do they come up with that he would have no chance at all. The overall quality of the race was a bit crap.

Has the trainer said he is useless?
Do they have to do a track trail like a greyhound?
Maybe his dam was crap(but then what were they doing bringing her to Rock of Gibraltar)

Unraced horses will be priced based on the breeding and how well the stable is running of late/ jockey booking etc

Also, some trainers just aren't known for winning with maidens first time out, while some are.

Look up David Loder, a former trainer who had a ridiculously high % of winners first time out. Obviously his horses were shorter than most.

Richard Hannon is taking over that mantle now.
While trainers like Tregoning/Cumani don't have horses primed to win maidens, so no matter how well bred will be bigger prices.

Agree with above, biggest factor affecting the price is who the trainer is and their record in certain types of races

e.g. the price on a Mark Prescott trained 2yo by Galileo in a 6f mdn is likely to be a lot bigger than price for same horse on its handicap debut over 10f as 3yo
