hi all, i have a 1991 landcruiser, commercial. im wondering what the story is regarding emmisions is on this car.

ive read that they just give it a max value (or something, im a bit grey on it) regardless of what the reading is.

but, i rang up the test center a while back, and asked the guy where they stand on it. i asked him if i could fit a straight through exhaust.
he said, "no no, we're fierce strict on emmisions"

so im a bit confused. any insight appreciated,

    regards,
    redd .

Emissions on a diesel are based on the opacity (how dense the smoke is basically) and nothing else.

For non-turbos it is 2.5 and for turbos it is 3.0

Having a straight through exhaust will not really affect the readings although you can be failed for excessive noise

correct me if i'm wrong but i think its the cat that effects the emissions and I wouldn't say a 1991 landcruiser would have a cat. If it does fail run a half tank of jet a1 in it:) that will make it nice and clean for the test.

Diesel cat, egr valves etc make no difference to the DOE test, as Slidey says diesels are done on smoke opacity. I know of a few Land Rovers with straight through exhausts, egr crap and cat removed that pass the DOE.

Chuck some decent diesel in it, maybe some injector cleaner and thrash it all the way to the test centre ;)

There's always rumours circulating that presence of emissions kit is going to be checked in future. Quite how they'd check what a vehicle left the factory with I don't know but don't throw away the bits!
