I tried but failed to set up saorview for my grandparents tonight. I thought for old tvs you could get it thru the vcr? I connected the saorview to the vcr with the scart lead, plugged the aerial into the saorview box and connected the vcr to the tv. Its an old tv they have that they bought second hand in the 80s and it has no scart plug.

You'll have to have Saorview selected as the source on the VCR, find out how to select an external channel or AV input.

    An RF modulator.

Unfortunately its the one aspect of the Saorview Spec that should have been a basic requirement.

Why? Generally pointless and would add extra expense for everyone.

Better to get the price low enough to afford one for each TV.

Yes, there are TVs with no SCART, but very very few and a VHS or separate Modulator will work.

Also, a TV without a scart must be low spec and very old, with 4:3 aspect ratio. Better to buy a small (20 inch or so) LCD one that is Saorview approved and that will give better service, better picture and an all round more useable piece of kit.

I only mentioned it as they are cheap as chips to add Watty.

And for people with really old equipment its a catch all, rather than having non tech people running stuff unnecessarily through VCRs. It could also be used for piping the channel being watched to other rooms with old equipment anyway.

There are already boxes (non Saorview) that do this for less than the Saorview box (minus MHEG5 of course).

It's more expensive to add than a SCART or MHEG5.

If the VCR has two scart connectors try both. Generally one will be marked TV and the other decoder. It's the decoder you want. Select AV1 /2 using the up down channel buttons on the front of the VCR. Turn the TV to the required VCR channel or connect a second scart from the TV to the TV marked scart connection on the VCR. Then turn the TV to AV1/2

You could play a tape on the VCR to confirm the VCR is connected to the TV ok and the TV is on the right channel. Then add the saorview box.
