Polar opposite views of yours.

How do you feel about reading views which are not only disagreeable to your views but polar opposite? Like you might love a movie and the. Your read a view and your wondering what planet is that guy/gal on that they could have such opposing views? Seems to be quite a bit on here.

Also what do you think about movie snobs who look down on a certain category of movie. Do they really think their views on movies are so superior to those who might enjoy said category?

I've no problem with opinions the polar opposite to my own, so long as they're willing to back up what they say with a rationale and theory; that's half the fun of internet debating afterall - to read interesting viewpoints as varied as the films they're discussing and get stuck into a healthy debate.

What I can't stand are the occasional one-liner types who trash something but then back off from any discussion with cries of "well I'm entitled to my opinion" etc. etc. If you believe in something you should be willing to back it up in a healthy, spirited fashion!

Yeah i don't really mind polar views at all but when they resort to talking trash I lose respect for their views.

Don't mind opposing views if they can give valid reasons, can't stand fanboy comments or people who hate a series of movies without ever having watched them (I've seen the first Twilight so I can rag on it lol) but this dismissing an entire genre for no reason thing I don't get.

Well that is kind of the point of boards and not just the film forum. For different points of view to be put across in the course of discussion over a topic.

I have no time for them, truth be told. I mean everyone is entitled to their opinion of course but if you think your opinion is far more important or better than mine or anyone else's then I know enough to not even bother with you. Once or twice I have had words with that type on here but thankfully the film board is full of mature posters (For the most part :p )

Disagreements are what make films worth talking about. As long as someone justifies their opinion, and at least takes the time to analyse the film at some basic, objective level, then they're entirely entitled to think whatever they want about it. It can be frustrating when people make sweeping, illogical statements one way or t'other, though: I think, personal preference aside, there tends to be elements of all films - whether it's cinematography, acting, whatever - that a general majority of viewers will be able to reach some level of consensus on, or should be able to comment on without resorting to pedantry or nitpicking. It's almost impossible to watch Citizen Kane and not admit how influential it was in establishing a filmmaking language, to take an example. Of course, whether one 'liked it' or not is an entirely different thing.

I have great respect for people who can differentiate between opinion and objective criticisms. There's a big difference between not liking a film and a film actually being bad (and vise versa).

As for polar opposites to my views, well obviously there's something wrong with those people :pac:

    Film is subjective.

I always enjoy reading a negative review of a favourite film
    and vice versa.
