    Hi guys..

I'm looking for some advice. I've done the dspreview and went into conns and had a word with them,, I've also asked a couple of friends but I'm still unsure on my final decision.

I'm looking to upgrade from the canon 1000d. I want to upgrade to a camera that'd I'd notice the difference compared to my 1000d so I'm looking at either getting the canon 40d second hand or the 60d second hand. Now the 40d will cost me €399 body only in conns and the 60d will cost me €799. I could get the 40d straight away if I can sell my 1000d but if I go for the 60d I'd have to save up for a while to be Able to afford it..

Can anyone tell me which camera they'd recommend I get?
Apart from the video function on the 60d (which I'm not actually bothered with) are there any other big differences? I've never bought second hand before so looking to purchase through a shop as will at leat get 6 months warranty.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :-)

What features/functions of the 1000D are holding you back? What lenses do you have?

    Hi Kenny,

I primarily love sports photography.. I find the 1000d is too slow for this. I also love taking photos of animals and nature and some portrait snaps too.
I have the stock 18-55mm which I never use.
    I also have the 50mm 1.8 and the 75-300mm.

I would ideally like to upgrade the camera first and then the lenses.

Shop around other than Conns. They are usually more expensive than elsewhere.

New 60D for a little over €740, here.

Bought mine from this site. Two days delivery from Hong Kong, and if you're charged VAT and customs they will refund it :)

Wel I checked out berminghams and conns are cheaper than them.. Guns have no prices online.

Hi telchak, thanks for this.. Any issues with warranty? Also, how do you find the 60d? Did you have a different canon before that one?

With Hong Kong sellers, your warranty is with the seller - not Canon.

Hard to know whether they'll honour it (or to what degree they'll honour it). See if you can find some customer testimonials.

If they do refund VAT it might be worth a go regardless.

Do they really do that, Telchak? It doesn't sound feasible... everything seems to get caught by customs these days (sign of the times, I suppose).

Oh and the 60D is €648 from these guys

    http://www.t-dimension.com/revamp/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&keyword=60d&searchfor=product&inc_subcat=0&search_in_description=0&page=1&sort=3a

I've ordered from them twice and had no problems. Got caught by customs on both occasions but it was still significantly cheaper than the prices here.

Wow that's a great price.. And how much did customs hit you for out of interest?

What you think of 60d amdgilmore?

Are these prices the second hand prices from Conns? You can buy brand new bodies from reputable, local (EU) online sellers for less with warranties honoured by Canon and no issues with customs.

The 40D is a great camera. Strong build and still going strong for me after 6 years. Fast and reliable enough for sport shots. The 60D is not a progression from the 40D/50D and definitely not worth the higher price. If you had in the region of €800 to spend I would suggest to go another €200/300 and get a 7D.

I've never used it, to be honest. I opted for a 600D, which shares some of the 60D's genes (same sensor, I believe).

I've heard nothing but good things about it though. I'd imagine it would be a great upgrade from the 1000 but I obviously can't give any specific info.

Check your private messages in a minute, re:customs.

edit: Articulating screen is a major plus for the 60D, by the way. The 600D has one too. No more getting your clothes dirty when you want to get those ground-level shots. It's useful for gigs too.

Have gotten a few mixed opinions on the 60d so far but mostly good reviews on the 40d... Do you currently have a canon yourself crazydaize?

I was in the same position as yourself last october. My choice at the time being second hand, 600D, 60D or 7D. In the end I went with the 60D. When making my decision I found this review very useful as it compares a lot of things across the canon range, including the older 40 and 50d cameras.

If theres anything youd like to know about the 60d ask away. My brother has a 40d and every now and then when i tell him somthing my camera does i get "oh thats handy".. so im glad i went with the 60 in the end. Really love it. Not that you will be dissapointed with the 40, its still a great camera.

I got mine from amazon, as at the time was the best price. I decided not to go down the hong kong route, due to warranty, possibility of being hit by customs (I get other stuff from there regularly, and lately its 50 50 if u get hit by customs or not), and had read some bad reviews of a few places including some mentioned above when people had problems. I wasnt willing to take the chance and decided to pay a bit extra. But thats your choice :)

I got a 40D almost 5 years ago when they first came out and still using it now. Image quality is fantastic and I've never had a problem with it.
