    well, since you asked :

    Ridge Racer :
The 3D is fantastic. Ironically for a driving game the racing is pedestrian. The career mode is pointless since you earn money faster than you can unlock new cars and upgrades, so you always have everything at your fingertips. Life is too short to play merely adequate games.

    WWE All Stars :

Given that the wrestling game was perfected on a nintendo console 12 years ago - WWF Wrestlemania 2000, and it's follow up No Mercy are as good as it gets - it's insulting that on a console that has more processing power, storage space, connectivity options and voxels in it's arsenal that a game this poor could be released under the same banner. On the bright side, I traded it in for roughly what I payed for it so no harm done. The CAW mode only uses set move templates based on the existing toons, so there's no point using it. Those move templates are severely limited in terms of grappling options (you have roughly 25-30% of the variety available in the ancient N64 games) but matches bizarrely seem to take about 50% longer making them repetitive in the extreme. Ultimately though it's the lack of love for the "sport" - where's the create-a-belt option? Or create-a-stable? Guest referee matches? Streetpass tournaments that let you gather wrestlers from local 3DS owners for bot-driven tournaments and post the results up on the web along with screen-grabs of the big moments? For shame!

    Sonic Generations :
If you like Sonic games you might like this. It turns out, I don't like Sonic games no matter how much I want to. I like "Chao"s. But they aren't in this game even though it would be perfect. Anyway, this is a mix of 3D and 2D Sonic levels from other games. And as such it's basically an on-rails experience where you occasionally hit jump to keep the action moving. There's a story that's the usual confusing mix of sci fi hokum, piss-poor jokes and possibly badly translated japanese. If that's your bag then you'll love this trip down Sonic's memory lane. Alas, it most definitely is not my bag. Maybe I'm more of a valise type of guy. As soon as NSMB 3D or Luigi's Mansion get released, there will be a 2nd hand copy of this in a Smyths near you* :)
*if you are near me, at any rate...

    Ghost Recon
Do you like ordering americans to their death? How about shooting kazakhstani rebels in the face at point blank range with assault rifles? This is a decent, simplistic squad based shooter in the vein of X-Com. Choose a squad of X guys from a team of Y, give the rebels hell. In the Con corner, squaddie development is totally linear, you cannot develop your team your way. Also, barring the 3D effect, I can't see much that would have stopped this being a DS title, and there's no use of the camera or streetpass. There might be multiplayer, I never looked. Can't see the point if you can't build your own squad. Anyway, in the Pro corner, it's simple, it's fun and it's cheap, and remains the best game on the platform for under €20 I think. Haven't finished it, can't comment of replay value.

    Street Fighter 4
A very good fighting game on a platform that's not designed for fighting games. Having played this fairly poorly on the PS3 and PC, I can say hand on heart that aside from the crippling pain in my hands I can't tell the difference really. Great fun if a little limited and repetitive. Not a lot has changed since Street Fighter 2, I mean there's a couple of hypermegazongacombos and some new characters but basically it's the same game. Not my favourite fighter on the 3DS as it's highly focused on split-second timing combos that my wizened digits can't pull off but who doesn't love dragonpunching Vega when he tries to jump off the wall at you? Again, it's cheap and worth it's sub €20 price tag. Infinite replayability for as long as you can enjoy dodging constant fireballs online before sweeping to victory.

    DOA : Dimensions
I love this game. I know, it's not as deep a combo system as SF4, but I don't care since I can actually pull off the combos. Loses points for the character design. They're all pretty bland and samey (to the point that 3 of the women and 2 of the men are the same gal/guy). Also, there's a needless focus on the girls flashing their cleavage around, which is a little uncomfortable given the dead-eyed half-finished puppet look most of the characters have. The fighting though is fast, brutal, easy to pick up and tough to master. Can't ask for more than that! Worth noting that the DLC content (fights for specific trophies and 30+ costumes) are not being distributed any more as far as I can see. Online fights, streetpass matches, the 100-man survival mode - great replay value.

    Mariokart 7
It's Mariokart, done well with awesome online features. Buy it.

    Super Mario 3D World

Best game on the platform. Buy it.

    Kid Icarus : Uprising
It's…. Grand. The script is funny, the gameplay is fine for a while, the camera on the walking sections gets annoying pretty quickly and there's not really that much to do. Fly and shoot, run and shoot, boss fight (more shooting), breathe and repeat. It's fun, but not full price fun. Streetpass gem trading is a little uninspiring, especially given that you have to pay hearts for the weapons you receive and they cost a feckin' fortune in hearts. I got it cheap. I'm not sure I'd be happy if I paid full price for it. If you enjoy the gameplay, it's got tonnes of replay value in the heart-gambling difficulty slider and weapon customisation.

    Resident Evil : Revelations

Fantastic. Not quite an FPS but there's a lot more freedom of movement than on previous RE titles I've played (RE4 on the Wii, RE2 on the PC) making it scarier - usually when the **** hits the fan you don't have frustration with the controls to cushion you or to blame when it all goes wrong. Plenty to do in the online section as well. Streetpass usage is a little pointless. Definitely worth checking out, and the offline/online Raid mode extends the life immeasurably.

Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time 3D
It was awesome then. It's awesome now. Gaming has moved on and some of the game mechanics are by today's standards a little old fashioned but the strength of this game has always been in it's dungeon design - which remains superb - and the charm of the plot which hasn't diminished. Unless you've already beaten it twice in the last 5 years or so it's worth playing again.

    _____
    Freaky Forms

Kind of pointless. What little gameplay there is is charming but incredibly repetitive, there's no real incentive to keep playing and I can't put the same time and energy into my forms that other players I've SPed with have. I found that after a couple of days I only really opened this if there was an SP hit. If I had to start over I would not buy this again unless it was sub €2.

    Pushmo / Pullblox

A joy to play. Difficult but thanks to the rewind feature never too frustrating and chock full of eureka moments when it all comes together.

    Colours! 3D
A great little painting app. Even a spanner like me can get decent results out of it. 3D effect created through use of layers, so if you plan in advance you can create some cool results. Well worth having on your home screen. Unless you're not interested in drawing/painting, in which case what is the point?

Legend of Zelda : Links Awakening
Good fun in the vein of LttP. Expensive for what you get but if you're jonzin' for a zelda fix and you've played 4 Swords to death, this'll cure what ails ya!

    Legend of Zelda 4 Swords
Again, good fun in the vein of LttP but not quite as charming as Links Awakening, mainly because it's an action-focused multiplayer title with not as much of a plot to tie it all together. Works well even in single player. Was worth the zero quid I paid for it.

    DSiWare - Starship Defense
I flat out loved this. Not much to mark it out amongst most tower defense games but the drawn-on-copybooks art style, some outlandish weapons and the fact that you didn't need a functioning upper screen to get the best out of it made it the right game at the right time for me.

DSiWare - Go series undead storm

This feels like a home-made PC game - The graphics are poor, the gameplay is repetitive, and there's very little incentive to keep coming back. Maybe it works better multiplayer but I wasn't pushed.

DsiWare - Anonymous Notes - From The Abyss Chapter 1

Seemed like it was going to be an interesting little loot hoarding crawl with a twist, and it was for 3 floors but then there was a massive boss, and if he beats you you have to run all the way through the last floor of the dungeon to face him again, the pointless grind of it all just got depressing. The suck-skills-out-of-badguys lottery thing was cool though.

    Kid Icarus :
Pointlessly annoying platformer from yesteryear. Even at 0 pence it was too expensive.

Mighty Switch Force on the eShop is great too.
Puzzle-Platforming with level control (push a button to switch some platforms on and off.
    Very enjoyable.

Catrap on the Virtual Console is a very simple but deceptively mind wracking puzzle platformer. I'd highly recommend it if you like challenging puzzle games.

Shinobi 3DS: You can find it very cheap at the moment and you really should snap it up. It's a great platform action game that can get very difficult but never unfairly so. Ignore the reviews because this one is better than they give it credit for.

Thanks, been wondering about that for the longest time!
Enjoying playing the old Game Gear one, used to own it (before my Game Gear decided to fry the power connection and power switch :()
Now it's still decent, but some parts are painfully and unfairly awkward.
Kinda like I don't know how I got past that one jump in the PC version of TMNT back in the day, and now can't manage it at all!

Can't agree there, the best thing about the GG Shinobi games, and the good old school shinobi games in general is that they are always tough but fair.

Mighty Switch Force - forgot I had that. I found it a little disappointing because I lack the skillz. It's good fun but the split second timing required for some of the later levels drives me up the wall, combined with the repetition of trying to get back to the section I can't do. Good game though, a clever game mechanic and a reasonable difficulty curve, short but with trying to beat the times adds a bit of replay value.

Edit : NO! The best thing about the oldschool Shinobi games is when he goes "omnamitahomnamarachicha!" and a load of kanji spirals into his head and then he explodes around the screen. I used to look forward to going on holiday because they had the Shinobi arcade box in the airport and I could watch it do that. Never had the cash on me to play... The first person tiny-ninja-massacre bit is a close second :)

Shinobi is €11.99 new in HMV.

I always found that with that one in particular, there are a number of appear-out-of-nowhere-and-leap-on-you guys.
The original arcade Shinobi and Shadow Dancer, now you're talking.

RE: Revelations is the outstanding title for me, so far. Mario 3D Land is excellent, but suffers a little in comparison with Galaxy 2. From playing just the demo, Dead Or Alive seemed simplistic and piss-easy, which is pretty much what the home console versions are like...probably better to stick to Street Fighter IV.

Kid Icarus is attractive in terms of production values - great graphics and sound - but has an annoying script, poor characters, and terrible, terrible controls, which render it basically unplayable on the move; you pretty much have to rest the console on something, such as the provided stand, to play comfortably (or stick a matchstick to your thumb with a band-aid to act as a stylus :P) It's not a bad game underneath it all, but it's no Sin & Punishment.

As far as downloadable stuff goes, I'd recommend VVVVVV, a port from PC of a retro-style puzzle/platformer by Irishman Terry Kavanagh. It's got simple but absorbing gameplay, Speccy-like graphics (with a neat 3D gloss), and a really cool soundtrack. On the downside, it can be infuriatingly hard (truly retro in that respect!), particularly because of the overly-sensitive controls, and is a tad expensive at 8euro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

DOA is piss easy solo, but fun none the less - I still can't break a 96 streak in the 100 man rumble. But its all about multiplayer, trying to balance your attacks - which becom progressively predictable and therefore counterable - with defense, and angling for environmental advantages. Give it a go!

    Anyone tried spirit camera?

    ^ This. Worth it though!
I found the more sensitive controls better than the PC version, whose controls felt a little sluggish to me!

    [edit]
ESPECIALLY at the "Veni, Vedi, Vici" part!!!

Trying to get into 2D fighters properly at the moment...I've always been a button-masher, and could never pull off any moves, so I got BlazBlue: CS for the Xbox because it's got the most painstaking, handholdy tutorial mode which takes you through everything from PRESS RIGHT ON THE DPAD TO MOVE FORWARD, DIP****, up to combos, strategies, and all the rest.

It's just what I needed; SF should have one like that. Now I just need a controller with a proper dpad that actually responds some of the time when I press it.

(Btw, 3DS version of BB is supposed to be total crap in case anyone is wondering.)

Anyone play mario tennis?? Is it worth 40 euro?

    Downloaded:

Zen Pinball: If you like pinball, you'll enjoy this. Four tables, hot seat play, online leaderboards, decent graphics and 3d and a load of replayability.
Pretty easy to get an enormous score though.

Marvel Pinball: pretty much a Marvel skin on the same above but harder to get a huge score. Still excellent though and if you're getting one, get this one.

Goooooal Europa 2012: It's a DSi game of those tabletop springy-plastic-footballer-attached-to-the-pitch-bend-back-and-shoot games. Basic and overpriced but a hell of a lot of fun and replayability is good. Just make sure you have the ball-is-a-timed-bomb option turned on and respawn turned off. That way, you can blow up the entire English or German teams and win by default :)

    Cartridge:

According to my activity log, this is my top played list:

    1) Resident Evil Revelations....love this game and still play it after 86 hours of play.

    2) Ghost Recon Shadow Wars....I'm a fan of this type of game anyway but another one I go back to every now and then.

    3) Heroes of Ruin....the last game I got and was addicted to it for a while. After playing 50 hours of it though, it's starting to get boring and there's little incentive to finish using all the characters.

    4) Ocarina of Time....nuff said. Awesome.

    5) Assault Horizon Legacy....big surprise this one. Highly recommended and a bit like pokemon, you'll want to keep playing to get all those classic planes.

SF4 has a challenge mode that teaches you specific combos, they're just impossible to pull off without superhuman motor neurons! You have to time button pushes to points in animation, drives me up the wall

I am literally just finishing it atm (97% complete). It's ok, it can get very repetitive. It's kind of easy as well. There's a ridiculous amount of loot to find and I've never once needed to buy anything, which meant I maxed out my cash as well, so I couldn't even sell the stuff. The quests are very samey, they're all practically just variations on find this guy and kill him, or maybe 2 or 3 guys.

It's about 10 hours long but even that has started to drag a bit. If you could find it cheap I'd say maybe give it a go, it is a decent dungeon crawler, just could do with a bit more variation. I wouldn't pay full price for it though (thankfully I didn't :)).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

Is the demo still up on the eShop?
Demo isn't all that awe inspiring, feels a lot like Deano's description, it's an uninspired Diablo or Dungeon Siege clone but without the charm of... well, Diablo or Dungeon Siege.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I liked HoR (more at the start than the end, tbh). The coin cap was stupid, and the game was pretty easy. I think the first time I died was on the final boss (and that was only because I didn't know what I had to do).

Good game if you can get it at a good price. Don't pay full whack.

Seen it for €30 in HMV may wait to see it a bit cheaper on adverts or that. Thanks for the feedback. I think I just have to bite the bullet and pick up Virtues last reward on Amazon.

    I'm loving Virtue's Last Reward!

Put 10 hours in and got just one of the finishes. The new controls are great too. I'd definitely recommend it

Wampy - This thread is for recommendations of games you've played, could you keep the new release scoops to the Pre-Release thread please?
(I'm not a mod or anything, feel free to ignore me)

I know it's not a 3DS game per say but I have to say I've ploughed so much time into Pokemon Black 2 in the last 2 weeks... it's like blue meth!

I think (from what I remember!) that March 28th was the release date they gave in the video?

Currently playing through Paper Mario Sticker Star and loving it!
I know some people complained about the sticker use rather than normal levelling up and normal moves, but it's essentially the same thing, just a different application! In previous games, you would have a limited number of points that would get used up by your moves, this time you have a limited number of moves to use! It's a nice twist on the mechanic.

Enjoying Kid Icarus at the minute(with a little bit of Ace Attourney). Its pretty good but I don't have the stand or any AR cards. What do the AR cards do exactly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

you put the card on the table and point your 3DS at it, and whatever the pic on the card is, a 3D version of it pops out of the card - like the AR cards that came with the system or the Pokedex 3D glyphs.

If you put two cards beside eachother they have a fight with an arbitrary winner. I guess that lets school-kids pit(t) them against eachother and the winner takes both cards?

I don't think they change the game in any way and I haven't noticed any benefit to having played with the AR section of the game.

The stand on the other hand is a must-have unless you want to have arthritis by June.

    Please, flashy or nothing.

The one problem I found was that after a while I started avoiding combat as there was really no incentive. Other than that I really enjoyed it.
