    Hi there,
we are currently buidling a new house. I really want to include cream doors but Im not so sure about cream architrave and skirting, especially when living out in the country! Has anyone come across cream doors with timber effect architrave? Ive often seen it the other way around (such as walnut doors with cream architrave). Thanks!

Is your concern about "living in the country" down to style or maintenance?

From a style point of view, I've never seen painted doors with varnished architrave\skirting.

I'm at the end of a self build and alot of magazines were bought regularly for ideas along the way and it's not something I recall seeing. As you've said, it's usually the other way around.

We went for painted everything and oak doors. Part of me wonders what the painted doors would be like. We did pay for a little interiors advice and she was happy that what we wanted would work but would have gone all painted herself. This is specific to the design and style of our home however so naturally can't be considered a golden rule.

If your concern is from a maintenance point of view, I'd be more concerned about the painted doors as they will get alot of hand prints etc.
Having said that, modern paint is pretty good and if you buy good doors and skirting, architrave and ensure that it's very well sanded\caulked, then cleaning it will not be an issue.

I will say that either way I would stay away from walnut. It's nice for specific pieces of furniture but I'd be concerned it's too in vogue at the moment. Oak is never in nor out really so it's always safer. Oak is also quite warm in colour.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I painted a house years ago where we painted the doors and archatrave white, but the flat part of the door frame was varnished. It was quite an affect, havent seen it done since. it was very nice.
