I was so excited that I was offered a job-bridge internship, and I hated them in the past, but got over everything that was wrong with it in the hope it would help me in the future.

However, the company says it wont be sorted for a few weeks, maybe a month or two, yet they want me to work for free until then... I was treated horribly there my first few days (I can deal with that, but it adds insult to injury). I am being asked to work fifty hours a week (the max is forty) BUT the worst thing about it is, the last few days I have been doing absolutely NOTHING.....There is barely any customers, and I keep asking for stuff to do but they say there is nothing, I have done everything already..... I want to get out while I can, but is it extremely rude to back out after accepting?

If this was a real job maybe I'd CONSIDER sticking it out, but what is the point in doing it for nine months, if I'm not going to get the experience....I can stand around anywhere for free!!!!

My question is, if you were in my poisition, would you get out while you can, and how would you go about it?

    Thanks.

Hi, if you really don't want to do it don't, aren't you lucky you found out now before you started the job bridge internship. If I was you I'd tell them that your after been offered a full time job and you start next Monday, give them a chance to take on someone else and for you to look into another internship....

The first thing I'd do is to clarify things with the company - If you have been asked to start your experience there before your internship starts , what had they in mind for you to do?

Also have you agreed with the company what exactly your work experience will be?

The job bridge internship FAQs on the website seems to indicate that the work experience is described in the standard agreement and that it should be complied with.
    http://www.jobbridge.ie/toolkit/faqintern.pdf

"Who will look after me during my placement?

The Host Organisation will nominate an individual to support and/or mentor you during your placement. This person will have responsibility to ensure that you receive a proper induction, ensure that your work experience as described in the standard agreement is progressing and that monthly compliance checks are being completed (to ensure your internship allowance continues to be paid by DSP). If an organisation has a formal mentoring programme, they should include you in this programme."

So I think it's important to seek clarification and ensure that you both have a common understanding of the expectations of the work experience. Check that you'll be getting what you will be signing up for..what will you be doing etc

If I wasn't going to get the experience I wouldn't agree to it.
The scheme is subsidised with the intention of providing work experience to enhance job prospects.(..that's my understanding anyway)

Do you think it's ok to lie though? I mean obviously it's dishonest, but I don't really wanna be rude and say well I hate it, bye...

You are right, at least it wasn't half way through.

    Thank you.

See, we had that conversation when I was starting.... It's just a completely different story when I'm in there. Now, I don't expect to be doing everything straight away -FAR from it....But doing ANYTHING would be nice.

Sorry for the Qs - but say I politely explained I got a job offer, could that come back and bite me in regards to SW?? I don't want them to think I actually DID get an offer, but it seems easier than getting into a messy personal explanation that will only come out bad..
