Have you removed the complete shock and coil spring?

I presume you know that the spring must be compressed before you undo that nut that's giving you the trouble. Once it's compressed, you might be able to get it undone with an airgun. If you're sure you wont be reusing the shock, just clamp the silver shaft of it with a vice grip to stop it turning.

What exactly is the trouble? It's easy enough to diagnose a failed shock without having to "take it out and see".

Unbolt the shock top from inside the boot, jack the car up, undo the bottom nut.

Repeat process backwards! Tighten the bottom bolt again and you're done.

    Are the shocks original ones?

The spring and shock are separate on the rear of the focus.
The trouble were having is when we hit bumps big or small there is a loud knock and the side its on is constantly vibrating when driving.I jacked the car up and i'm able to grab the wheel and lift it up and down with ease.

    OK.

Is the spring broken? The shock should be under compression from the spring when the car is jacked up as far as I can recall. Otherwise are all the bushings intact?

If you disconnect the shock at the bottom, you will have a fair idea whether it's gone. You should be able to move it up and down, but only just.

If you need to replace it, you will need to do both sides.
