More info needed! What type of car are you after, engine size etc?

Very few if any car supermarkets here, unlike in UK.

Car supermarkets need ready availability of stock. Typically sell 2-4 year old cars from fleets, for example leased cars, ex rentals, etc. Typically will not have clean low mileage examples, nor will have a big selection of older cars (general statement).

In other respects the "car supermarkets" aren't very different to other dealers, with possibly less focus on customer service and more focus on volume, selling finance packages, etc.

Bottom line is I don't think you will find what you want there. Also, what you want is probably the type of car that is most in demand at this time of year, and is always in short supply. Not an easy search, but the cars are out there if you look hard enough. Best of luck with the search.

For an 03ish car I'd look for a private seller with a minter

As mentioned, almost all the car supermarkets sell ex fleet cars and they are usually between 2 and 4 years old. There used to be a substantial price difference between the car supermarkets and main dealers or other garages. I bought a 2.5 year old honda accord 5 years ago from cargiant with ~45k miles for 6.5k stg. New price was 18 - 19k and dealers were looking for between 8 and 9k for similar examples. No-one wanted petrol accords, they were going cheep ... diesel accords at the time were 3k more expensive and all had much higher mileage.

I have been looking at cargiant recently and they are not as competitive as before, 1k saving on a diesel verso, but only 3months warranty compared to the garage offering 1 year.

Also, there is absolutely zero haggling with the car supermarkets, thats the price, take it or leave it.

There used to be a number of them here. I think it was Auto Exchange had four outlets nationwide. All gone now AFAIK. There's a company out in Naas import UK cars, can't think of their name right now but they're out by Toughers there. Seem to be the best of the lot.

No, there the guys on the main road just before the roundabout. The one's I'm talking about are down the back. Only opened in 2008 I think. I'll try find them online now.

EDIT: These are who I'm talking about. No direct experience myself but from what I've read and heard they're pretty good.

With the high exchange rate and by the time you VRT it, there will be no savings in going to the UK for that age of car. You are better off buying private here.

What sort of budget do you have?

might aswell take your chances at an auction, i dont trust them supermarkets at all,you wont get much hop if something goes wrong,,and they aren't much cheaper than a dealer i have found

You should be able to pick up a 2005 Ford Fiesta for around that budget:
