Young Person Questions About The NCT

I have just bought an older car that needs the following, two new tyres, spare wheel, and the tracking adjusted. These are the things I know about.

I would rather not waste money on two new tyres, only to then find out from the NCT that there is some big fault with the car, which would require hundreds of euro. In that case I would just sell the car for parts, and move on to another one.

Is it ok to put the car in for the NCT with these obvious faults, so as to show up the other faults and then take it to the garage? Or will they be all like "how dare you bring this car in to us in such obvious disrepair?"

No provided the tyres aren't dangerous it's a good idea to get it tested first. If they don't cop the tracking the tyres are a visual and free re test on replacement

It's generally fine to bring the car in as-is, but do bear in mind that if they deem the car to be in a dangerous condition they'll advise you not to drive it home and call the Gardaí if you do. How bad are the tyres?

The front left is pretty bald to be honest, and whilst I'm not a mechanic I would guess that the car is bordering on dangerous due to the tracking.

No spare wheel is fine unless it's a PSV.

Is your local NCT centre far away from where you live?

I think this is exactly whats wrong with the view to the NCT in this country, its seen as the be all and end all of maintaining a car.

If you think the car is dangerous (or even bordering) as-is then just pay the EUR40 to get the tracking done now. Yes, most likely you will have suspension and bushings gone in the front and might need to get it re-done, but at the very least you would have a car thats ok to drive and not playing roulette your own and everyone elses safety.

Go get 2 good part worn tyres (EUR50) and part for a tracking (EUR40) then worry about the NCT afterwards. Bear in mind if you do end up breaking the car for parts (which I find unlikely given the level of question you posted here) then you can remove and keep the tyres, so their cost is a net zero and should not be used against doing it first.

Has it ever happened to anyone?
Seen this note on nct report, and was wondering how bad the car has to be to stop it from being driven from nct centre

NCT was positive, nothing much wrong with car, should be a cheap fix up.

He let me drive home at least!

    C'mon, details!
What car, what's the list of faults and what's the plan for the future?
We're a nosy bunch and always up for a good wrecks to riches story.
