Running in central Manchester

Hi Folks, heading away for a weekend in central Manchester shortly, and want to keep up the mileage if I can. Can anyone suggest any places to run in the city and surroundings? Looking for somewhere to do some sharp stuff (so not traffic, flat/soft surface etc.) and also somewhere interesting for a long run..

Will try and do the local South Manchester park-run on Saturday morning, but may have other commitments, so any other suggestions would be very welcome. Have searched the various run-route sites, but it's difficult to get any useful feedback.

You could try Longford Park in Stretford, it's where the Greater Manchester marathon started and finished this year. Big and flat from what I remember, less than five minute walk from the Stretford tram stop. The surrounding areas of the park should be quiet too at a weekend, as long as United aren't playing at home of course!

Run along the Stockport road. It'll take you out of Manchester.

I ran from the train station to Irlam before, only because I had spent all my my money at monsters of rock in Donnington :o. The road was pretty good and I think I kept up a decent pace considering I was in denims and had a rucksack full of bootleg albums :D - it was about 12 miles from memory and takes you to the right side of the boarder.

If only this forum had a few more runners and a few less back-passage hobbyists.

    ;)

now i am being serious hic,if i was a runner[and i am not] i could not think of a better place to run than on the towpath of the bridgewater canal, the only people you will meet are fishermen and the odd old dear walking her dog,33 miles of lock free canal, you can get on the canal in the centre of manchester at canal street, but be warned dont run down canal street as you may get a name as a tease.
