Amsterdam in August

So, it looks like we're off to Amsterdam for 5 nights in August, Wed to Mond, incorporating a music festival in Sloterpark on the Saturday.

Flights are booked, last minute and at cost, gig tickets are secured, which leaves me looking at accommodation. As a couple, we usually try to find decent private rooms in hostels.

Can anyone recommend a good, or cheap, hostel? I'm tempted to take the cheaper offers of hotel rooms which are 'just off the A10 ring road', but fear that these may be less than cost-effective or good choices when it comes to visiting the centre.

Has anyone any experience of Airbnb? I haven't tried this yet, and don't really like the idea of sharing a small apartment, but it's something I'm considering at the minute.

[edit] in fact, I've just come across CityHub on Airbnb. Has anyone tried this?

Does anyone know of any private accommodation? Perhaps not through airbnb?

I don't want to be a cheapskate but I'm already down €450 with flights and tickets. Luxury is not really an issue for us as we don't expect to spend too much time in the room anyway, but still prefer not to go to dorms, although that might suffice on this occasion.

From what you've said above, Hotel van Onna in the Jordaan could fit the bill nicely. It's on a lovely canal called the Bloemgracht - under 10mins walk from Dam square and directly opposite the Anne Frank huis and the Westerkerk.

It's basic, no frills but very well maintained with friendly staff - I stayed there occasionally when attending Uni in the Netherlands and recommended it to pals who bedded down there during the Icelandic ashcloud debacle.

    En Suite doubles for €95

Thanks for the suggestion but I have to say that's a little higher than I'd hope to pay. €525 for the duration of our stay is a bit too high.

    €525?

No worries, the price of dorm beds in Amsterdam centrum may surprise you though.

If you specify 'private room' in Airbnb search criteria, there's accomodation available @ the Oosterpark for €125 for 2 people x 5 nights (plus Airbnb fee).

For the record, just in case anyone pulls this up, we ended up staying in the EasyHotel which is in the De Pijp area (I think). Got a double room for €325 for 5 nights. The room was comfortable if compact, ensuite, large bed, good black-out blind, air conditioning. It was quite a good area too as it was serviced by a couple of tram lines (the 25 and the 12). The only downside is that for the price, you don't get a remote for the tv, hairdryer, linen or towel change. They're all extra. If you can live with that, it's a decent place to stay with good transport links and a nice area.
